We're having Emma's (Bri's daughter) Jack Russell (Ollie) next week while she goes on holiday. He's just been neutered (two weeks) as he marked my house when he visited before. I told her we couldn't have him unless he was neutered so she got him done. :D

The thing is, he's too boisterous for Rosie, he's like a live wire tearing around the house and it's too much for her. Ruby just takes it in her stride but Rosie was growling and barking and snapping at him today. :( I don't think she'd do him any harm but you never know. I'm only out for a few hours per day, usually 3 days per week. I obviously can't leave him in the same room as Rosie, I don't want to crate him in case he yaps while I'm out. So it's either another room and hope he doesn't yap because he knows the other two are in the house, or take him with me on my round. Then I've got to be on guard in case he tries to jump out of the car everytime I get out. I was hoping he might calm down a bit when he's on his own with us. Dilemma's, Dilemma's. I'd better get prepared for a nervous breakdown. :o :D :o Oh, and I'd better prepare the neighbours as well.

Jack's do tend to be a little hyper - they are high-energy dogs. I would suggest crating him in a back room of the house for the few hours you are gone, with his favorite toys and a tv or radio on. I would hate to think of there being an issue with Rosie while you're gone.....

Good luck!!

I've just thought Courtnek. I don't know if he gets to go out a lot at home, some people don't bother exercising their dogs when they are only small. I was wondering, with him going on the Heath here 3-4 times a day if it might tire him out a little and he may become less hyper around the house. Don't worry, there is NO WAY I am leaving him in the same room as Rosie whilst I'm out. :o

extra exercise might help to tire him out - I dont believe I've ever seen a tired Jack tho....LOL

How long are you keeping him? You could probably train him to leave ROsie alone while you're there, but I think I would still crate him while you're out, just to be safe. Since it's only for a few hours there's no harm done. Somewhere at the back of the house where he cant see the other dogs, and like suggested, leave a radio or tv on. That seems to calm some dogs greatly....

How long will you have him?
If it is just a short time: I would advise the neighbours, take him out for a long play just before going out and crate him with toys and tv or radio . . . and be as quick as I could.
If it is longer: I would work on crate training and properly socializing him with Rosie.

I feel for you. I babysat our neighbours Jack for the weekend once, I love him dearly but he wore me right out - and I have a BC :-? I don't think I'm the sort of person who could handle a Jack full time if their all like my neighbours dog. Although they are also of the opinion you don't need to excercise small dogs. They also have no idea how to housetrain or crate train so perhaps its just their Jack that causes me to have white hairs.

Best of Luck Marion

I agree Marion your dogs must come first !!
Have you got a kong you could leave him with ?
Another thing I did with Rio because he was a destructive pup was to get old food boxes chuck a couple of treats in them and tape them up good and proper so that he had to really get stuck in to open the box,I also put a box inside a box inside a box like a pass the parcel !!!

Since I have two jacks I thought I would add my two cents. Exercise is the key. If you can let him run and play some fetch with him that would be good. Also take advantage of your time with him and work on some training. A common misconception is that they need physical activity, however they need mental activity more than anything else. Maybe you could help teach him some things to make him better behaved in your home. They are extremely intelligent and love to learn.

My jacks do get tired and sleep quite a bit actually. If he gets to much for you send him my way, I can't wait to get another! Glutton for punishment, maybe. It's funny, I think big dogs are lazy now that I have jacks. Dont condemn him because of his breed. Work with it and you will be surprised it can be alot of fun. Let me know if you need any help.

Oh, I'm sure she wasnt condemning him Mary...just a little overwhelmed I think. Jack's can be a lot of work if you're not used to them. They are great dogs - lot's of fun, very intelligent - cute as a dickens too.

Where (or do they) did they get the reputation of "cat killers"? I have heard this from more than one person....I know terriers were ratters, but never could figure how they became cat killers from that....

thanks.

Cournek, interesting question. I haven't heard they are "cat killers" so to speak but it is general knowledge that they cannot be trusted with cats. That said I do know many JRT homes that have cats and the dogs do just fine. Usually if raised from puppyhood with cats, they are manageable. However even then it is recommended to never leave them alone together. Jacks are hunters and generally have very high prey drive. Cats are prey, they move like prey and act like prey. Many jacks probably dont really intend to hurt the cats, instinct takes over. And actually even as hunters, they were never supposed to "kill" the prey. They were used simply to bolt the prey from their den. If the dog killed the prey that took all the fun away from the hunter. Anyway, I would say they are not inherent cat killers but the potential for trouble is there and those with both must manage it carefully.
