Duke's doing great, and really enjoys walks. The only problem is that he'll try to lunge at other dogs. Normally, this would be less of a problem, but there are many stupid dog owners here that just let their dogs off leash and able to roam.

So far, this has happened about three times. You can control Duke, but then the other dog decides to follow duke!!! ARGH!!! Is there anything you can do about this? Something that will get the other dog to go away and still allow me to hold Duke back?

Stupid irresponsible dog owners :chainsaw1: :wallbash:

I hear your pain, there are ALOT of dogs allowed to roam free here, some of them aren't a problem, they just stick to their front yard and mind their own business, but others will chase you down the street and with a dog like Lily it can be hard to keep her under control sometimes. Aside from notifying the pound there isn't really much you can do unfortunatly. I'm buying Lily a halti collar, although that wont get rid of the problem it will at least save my arm!

You may try carrying an umbrella, the kind that you punch the button and the umbrella POPS open. This can sometimes avert another dog from getting to close.

The umbrella thing would be great, my dogs are terrified of my umbrella - really terrified, of cousre that could be problem you would have to desensitize duke first rather carefully.

I HATE OFF_LEAD DOGS!!!! No let me re-phrase I HATE OFF_LEAD DOG OWNERS!!!! My area is full of these dogs were meant to be free gofballs and thier barely trained dogs. its quite one thing to think that your dogs deserves to be free its another when it encrouches on me and my dogs walks.
But I will admit its pretty funny when they look over and they see this "killer pit bull" and thier dog is walking over to it and they cant stop it. Its like an instant lesson in leashing thier dogs.

Well I am an off lead dog owner. I dont walk my dogs off lead but I do take them out to do their business in the yard without a leash. They stay just fine and are very well behaved.

Personally I think that if someone walks by and doesn't like the fact that I have my dogs off leash in my yard, then they should find another way to go.

I dont believe that dogs being off leash is the problem. Why should the well behaved dogs be punished because of ill behaved dogs?? I think it is poorly behaved dogs that are the problem not the leash.

no one could be that ignorant. Admittedly its one thing to have them be in your yard(fenced?) verses being on a walk around the neighborhood but still, If your sweet little dogs come runningout of thier yard and up to a dog with an aggression problem and are subsequently killed guess what? its your fault and if your dogs had been leashed it would never have occured. it has nothing to do with training many people have dogs that are OB certified and are still aggressive with other dogs. I know Daz is extremely obedient, he knows all of the basics in English, German and Sign, but he is still very aggressive it is only because of the level of training that he has that i am able to take him around other people and dogs. he was socialized his entire life and we even had friends with dogs that came over and he played with but as he matured he just became overly dominant. I would never take him out into my yard without a leash. Drey is not dog aggressive at all and i would not take him out without a leash because you never know the temperment of someone elses dogs.

have some consideration for other people.

I'm not talking about dogs in the yard. They are no problem as long as they stay in the yard. The problem is the off-lead dogs that run out of the yard and follow other dogs and the dogs which are walked off-lead but the owner can't stop them from following another dog. Several dogs here are basically allowed to roam free without the owner watching them at all.

And going another way doesn't work when the other dog chases after your dog.

your dog should not be outside off-leash unless your yard is fenced. from the car to the house from the house to the car. that about all the lee-way i give on the subject. NO dog should be free to roam if a rabbit darted out in the street your dog would be in pursuit. there is so much out there that can hurt a free raoming dog its just not worth the risk.

Our yard is not fenced, but we are working on it to get him a run to put him in when he can't be watched (otherwise he's crated or kept in my room) but he is outside without a leash, but is with us, he never has any reason to leave the yard, has only left twice when we first got him, and we chased him back in, he hasn't left it since. Why would he leave it when we're there playing with him!? :D HOWEVER! We have this EVIL dog next door. Okay he's not evil, he's the hugest suck and I just love him, but his owneres are EVIL!! okay, their not either, just ignorent. This dog is HORRIBLE when it comes to wandering! That's our biggest fear is that he'll come in our yard and take Coal (the curious excited little pup) out of our yard, and teach him to wander!! aak! So irritating. Every time he comes here I get SOOOO mad, I always call Duke to me (this then brings the wanting to play Coal with) grab Coal, put him in the house, then take Duke home (what a coinky dink that this pestering neighbor dog is named Duke too by the way!  ) I have complained a mILLION times to the neighbors, and they will sometimes tie him up, but this lasts a week or two at the most. Every time I go for a walk, with or without Coal (he's still not trained very well on the leash so it gets really frustrating to take him with me, but he's learning) Duke follows and ARRRG! Once Duke is there, Coal will not listen (he's still just a pup, so don't start sayin he's not well trianed for those who don't know Coal's still little! ) I yell at Duke to go home, and he runs AHEAD of me! OPPOSITE way of his home!! I have half a mind to call the dog catcher, although they don't come out down our road :-? But I'd feel really mean to both Duke and the owners whom I've known all my life.
I wonder if there will ever be a really good answer in keeping these dogs home???
Oh, and another thing, we have two other dogs a ways down the road, both hunting dogs (named Trap and Shooter, hardy har har  ) who are extremly well trained, they almost never leave their yard, the whole time they've lived there I've only seen Trap leave the yard three times, and twice was when Hazel was in heat, the other when he was just a puppy. And when we have ever complained to these owners, they have kept their dogs home. Anyway, we walk by there, and these two dogs stand (in their yard) there and BARK AND SNARL at me and my poor little Coal! Tonight this happened, and I didn't know quite what to do! talk about being disturbed on a nice evening walk! Coal was so scared too! He really didn't know what to think! His little hackels were raise, and his tail between his legs, and he hid between my legs, and then he'd run ahead with his tail up, then run back (on leash mind you) but the poor little pup had no idea why these dogs were threatening him like this!! All I could do was try to calm Coal down and walk on by as quickly as possible!
Now what's to do about THAT? These dogs were simply doing their job, protecting their home (oh yeah, owners weren't home either) and they were on their own property! Ugh! So frustrating!
Sorry, kina went on for a long time there

Oh yeah, there's this other dog down the road who comes out of it's yard between 12:00 - 4:00 in the morning and barks on EVERYONE'S porches!!! She does this almost every night!! I don't notice anymore, I've learned to drown it out, but now I'm just sick of my parents complaining about it :-? Why oh, why do I have to live down a road full of irrisponsible dog owners?!?! :o :-? It's just uncanny!! :changes:
