JackieMaya Posted July 22, 2003 Posted July 22, 2003 Jackie killed her first squirrel today. :evil: When I got back from PetSmart with Jackie and Maya, I just let Jackie out of the car without a leash because she won't run, but I had a leash on Maya. Well, Jackie jumped into the bushes in front of the house, a squirrel jumped out and ran underneath my truck, and to the tree. Unfortunately, the squirrel didn't make it UP the tree, and Jackie got it. I yelled at her and she dropped it, and both girls left it alone then, but it was dead. :( She probably broke its back. Jackie is the sweetest dog in the whole world, but if there's a rabbit or squirrel, her hunting instincts take over, and she's extremely quick and athletic. She had previously killed two rabbits and a little shrew (or something like that) in the yard. Quote

abker17 Posted July 22, 2003 Posted July 22, 2003 Aw, poor squirrel. :( Abby's done it to, she got a rabbit once. I thnk the rabbit was already hurt, it was just sitting there when Abby saw it. She came over to it and stared at it for a second then pounced on it. I think she broke it's neck. :( :( :( I got really upset over it, but she was just being a dog. :-? If put in Jackie's position I know Abby would of done the same thing... Quote

JackieMaya Posted July 23, 2003 Author Posted July 23, 2003 Angelboddy, I think the squirrel was an adult. It was so pretty. But I know that it's just instinct taking over. Jackie is a great stalker, very quiet and determined, and she's VERY athletic. But when Maya sees a squirrel, she starts barking and carrying on. One time Maya was stalking Jackie, going very slowly and deliberately with her head down, until she was about 10 feet away from Jackie, then she just put her head up and trotted up to Jackie. Maya hasn't figured out how to END the stalk. Goofy girl. Quote
