dresden has been so terrible about having her nails trimmed i almost gave up, she would jerk and bite the clippers and mouth my hands and just be the BIGGEST pain in the neck......i don't like pinning dogs down and think it's a really bad (and dangerous) position to put yourself and the dog in, and dresden fights force with force-and she's really strong....yesterday i was thinking about it and decided i needed to be more creative, then i remembered someones suggestion about putting peanut butter on spoon as a reward for when you're clicker training, so i got a big spoonful of peanut butter and whenever i touched her toes with the clipper i clicked and gave her a bite of peanut butter.......after a couple minutes she was so distracted by her obsession with the peanut butter that i was able to clip her nails one by one while she was eating, occasionally giving her more peanut butter when she was good..........
so now i can FINALLY clip her nails, hopefully she'll connect the clippers with the peanut butter and see that getting her nails trimmed really is something good!

i thought maybe someone else would want to try this too, as i heard on another thread about someone, maybe meehs, having a hard time clipping their dogs nails.......

Isnt walking a dog wonderful, not only for the exercise but for keeping those nails worn down! my Rottie is 4 years old now and I have clipped her nails twice since I got her at 1 year of age...her dew claws she keeps down as she grabs rocks (or shall I say boulders) and pulls them around the beach with her front paws.

I dont clip Freebee's either for the same reason. Most of her nails are black, and I cant see where the vein is....

I accidently nicked one of my dogs veins trying clip them when they were black - all that blood scared the **** out of me, so I wont do it anymore.

I let her wear them down in the yard and on walks....

With black nails you can be pretty safe by just clipping where the nail actually curves down ward. What I do with with black nails.. I just hold the paw so I can see the underside of the nail and you can see the quick of the nail clearly on large breeds...smaller breeds its a little harder... so for small breeds I just tip the ends off. If you do happen to cut past the quick, keep a bottle of kwik stop handy it stops the bleeding very quickly....and it happens even to the best of people.

The emergency vet I called said to put flour on it - it clumps up with the blood and forms a "bandage" of sort over the vein - it worked really well in that case....

I've been scared ever since then tho....

thanks y'all, it's so nice to know there is a way to get them done. i would do like you all and walk her on roads but that doesn't wear her out in the least, so i take her behind our house for long hikes with lady and they both run like crazy and sleep for most of the rest of the day :) there are around 500 acres or so back there so it's a great spot.........
