DogPaddle Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 My brother was "watching" my dogs and they appear to have eaten at least some of a lightbulb. Ack . . . panic! What should I do! Aside from kick brother. Quote
gooeydog Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 Never had this happen before, but a call to the vet (if you haven't already done it) would probably be your best bet as to seeing what to do next. I did read something around christmas time about soaking cottonballs (has to be real cotton) in milk and feeding those to the dog if they ate any glass from x-mas bulbs... something about the cotton wrapping around the glass and trapping it in there so the edges would cut up the dog's insides. I have no idea whether it actually works or not, so it'd be a really good idea to check with the vet first :-? Quote
DogPaddle Posted July 15, 2003 Author Posted July 15, 2003 Thanks - called emergancy vet - its after hours here - the tech said watch them - if they show any of these symptoms bring them in immediately . . . long list of sympotms. Otherwise go to family vet in morning, going out for cotton balls and cream now. Quote
DogPaddle Posted July 15, 2003 Author Posted July 15, 2003 Got cotton balls and cream, dogs think their in doggy heaven and are oblivious to my concern, so far so good. Quote
Malamum Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 So the vet confirmed about feeding them cotton balls?? How did you get them to eat them?? Sorry for the million questions but I guess it's handy to know if any of us get in a similar situation. Keep us updated on how the furkids are doing. Quote
DogPaddle Posted July 15, 2003 Author Posted July 15, 2003 Vet TECH said it wouldn't hurt. I just took the cotton balls and soaked them in cream (10%) and fed them too them like treats - they loved them and were so eager I had to clean the cream off their eager little faces afterwards. I think your supposed to feeze them, isn't that what the other thread suggested, but no time, now I'll have some for future incidents though :-? Anyway no bad symptoms yet. On a cat note, I thought the cats would like a special treat of the leftover cream - one wouldn't touch it and the other had a few laps at it and walked away - of course their both practically anerexic (sp?) kitties so maybe that's why. Malamum Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 Thanks DP, I hope I never have cause to try it for myself but it's handy to know just in case. I hope there is no issues with the boys. Quote
Peng1zrule Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 It's supposed to be cotton balls and half-and-half, something real heavy. the liquid and the cotton attract the little shards--once gypsy ate a porcelain mask. I gave her two half-and-halfs and cotton balls and you could never tell she'd had the porcelain Quote
DogPaddle Posted July 16, 2003 Author Posted July 16, 2003 The boys seem fine, Kavik seemed a little more worried today than usual, but othewise no change in bahviour. Quote
ellieangel Posted July 16, 2003 Posted July 16, 2003 Phew they were lucky !!! :o It's been 24 hours now so they'll be fine now I reckon  Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted July 16, 2003 Posted July 16, 2003 we had a tread like this a christmas time in case a dog ate a glass ball off the tree, the cotten balls wrap around the sharp bits so they can be passed safely and normal. I do not remember anyone saying freeze them Quote
DogPaddle Posted July 17, 2003 Author Posted July 17, 2003 Ellieangel - Yay! They are definately fine. Zaphod is tearing around jumping and doing play bows, vainly trying to get Kavik to play. Kavik is playing catch with himself. Both boys had a great training session today - Zaphod finely clued in that the "down" command doesn't always come with me hand luring him with a biscuit. Of course now he lies down if I walk up to him but progress is progress. Kavik was flawless. :D Mouse - Thanks, maybe I just thought I aught to freeze some up so I'd have them ready on hand - we don't keep cream around here much. Quote
