Guest Anonymous Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 Solo/Mikito (Solo) is a 12 week old purebred Akita puppy. So far he knows how to sit, and learned it in 10 minutes! I am hoping to get involved in something with him, but Akita's are not exactly known for their speed to flyball, frisbee, and agility are obviously not an option. Any ideas? Quote
abker17 Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 How about search and rescue, or maybe therapy work? There's also canine free style, whre u dance with your dog. :) Also, there are non-competitive(sp?) forms of agility, where speed is not a factor, and u just go to have fun. Agility really is a great sport to do, and even if u don't have the fastest dog, so what? Just get out and have some fun! :D Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 he is very bright if he learnt basic commands so quick :klacz: Quote
courtnek Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 search and rescue would be good for an Akita - they like to keep busy. I think there should be a place where you can show mixes....I have always thought so - they are often just as intelligent and train up nicely, so why not? Quote
DogPaddle Posted July 13, 2003 Posted July 13, 2003 Competative obedience, therapy dog stuff, carting, weight pull, kicksledding and of course SAR. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 Wow, thanks for the great advice guys. Very helpful. I am going to look into the therapy work. We did that with my first Akita, Lexi. She was very good with the children who had cancer and things. I just didn't think Solo would be good at it because he is so hyper, he never sits down unless you're going to give him something  ! Quote
