Horsefeathers! Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 Welcome to my h*ll. :-? Nine dogs in the house at the moment. In addition to the maintenance things like decent food, heartworm prevention, Advantage for flea control, spays and neuters galore and stuff like that, we've had a major hip surgery (cha-ching), an epileptic dog who required medication (cha-ching), a major abdominal surgery (cha cha cha-ching), TWO cats with urinary tract infections and blockages (cha freaking ching), one dog with "issues" who has to take medication (cha?), oh and let's not forget the one going in tomorrow to be neutered (ching?). I feel yer pain. It's a good thing my vet likes me. :o Quote
Malamum Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 HF, I think you should get frequent flyer points from your vet. Quote
Daisysmom Posted July 11, 2003 Author Posted July 11, 2003 (cha freaking ching) :roflt:  :roflt: Quote

My bill for Sally's shots was 98.40 for shots & heartworm test (negative) & medicine. I got 95.00 back from the insurance company. :B-fly: Frontline is 48.50 and I will get another 15.00 back on it. Healthy dogs = priceless :D Don't get much better than this. Glad the babies are healthy. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 You always feel good that you've taken care of your dog after bringing them to the vet. I hate it when you get an unexpectedly large vet bill though. Glad to hear everything went well for you but I symathize with your frustration over the cost! One thing I don't understand is why the vet insists on doing a heartworm test every year. I know that there's an adverse reaction to the medication (and possibly very severe consequences) if it's administered to an infected dog. The thing is, I give all of my dogs the medication from before the spring thaw until after the winter freeze (I live in Minnesota). So there's NO WAY that they could sustain a misquito bite (infected or no) when they're not on the medication! Because of this there's NO WAY they're going to test positive. I've been proven right for over ten years of ALL of my dogs testing negative! Still the vet insists on nailing me for $50 per dog (or whatever it costs) for the test every year! I just don't get it. I have the same conversation with my vet every year but he always insists on giving the test. Quote
meehs Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 Oops! The above post was me... I forgot to login! Quote
ellieangel Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 Doesn't it feel good to know you've done right by them though ! Their health as you say is priceless :Dog_run: :Dog_run: Quote
mjriggl2 Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 What I found is the "prescription" drugs - like Heartguard - and other non-prescription drugs - like Frontline or Advantage - are extremely more expensive if buying from vets than from online stores. For example, when Wolfie was just adopted and tested to have ear mites, the doctor gave us Tresaderm for about $19, while later I found on one online store it costed only $9.9 a bottle! A whopping 47% discount! Someone is seriously wanting to get himself/herself another BMW!!! Quote
meehs Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 Yeah, I've noticed the price discrepancy on the prescription drugs too. In order to buy them from one of the online stores, you nedd a prescription from your vet though. Have you ever asked your vet to write you a prescription so you can buy the drugs elsewhere? Let's just say they're (or at least my vet isn't) not real happy to do it. They'll come up with 101 reasons why you should buy the medication from them. It's like pulling teeth to get them to write a prescription! Quote
Daisysmom Posted July 11, 2003 Author Posted July 11, 2003 Still the vet insists on nailing me for $50 per dog (or whatever it costs) for the test every year! I just don't get it. I have the same conversation with my vet every year but he always insists on giving the test. That's where the www.1800petmeds.com comes in handy. It is just about the same price, but you don't have to pay for the vet/office visit. (I checked out the prices already) Quote
DogPaddle Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 I was checking out a job futures web site and the average vet makes more than the average doctor, in fact only dentists make more than vets and not by much. Animal lovers my butt! I bet at least half of them are in it for the cash. I'm glad I've got a decent vet at least. Quote
mjriggl2 Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 There is an online store PetShed.com that requires no vet's prescription to buy drugs like Heartguard. Also I found their fleas control drugs ar the cheapest. It's an Australia company. Of coz, use your own judgement to buy the medications. Quote
meehs Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 You can get it with no prescription there? SWEET! I know where I'm buying Heartguard next time I need some!!! Thanks for the tip MJ! Quote
Malamum Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 Do you guys need a prescription to by Heartgard? Over here you can buy it from any vet or pet store and no prescription is necessary. Quote
Daisysmom Posted July 12, 2003 Author Posted July 12, 2003 No, I don't think we need one. I know you don't need one to order from 1800petmeds. We just can't buy them over-the-counter. Quote
