MUCH more outgoing towards him.waggin her tail gung ho...this is amazing. I've n ever seen her this outgoing...she's HYPER!! the real test will be when his friends come over. that's where the real fear has always been....I think I need to use a LOT less extract on her feet.... :o :o :o :o :o Quote

You could even experiment and try the peppermint without the melatonin or the melatonin by itself. I 'think' I am seeing another benefit of using the combined therapy on my dogs. Seems like they are starting to react LESS to an incoming storm even if it catches me offguard and I have not applied the extract or given the melatonin. Minor storms only, a biggie still cranks Jesse up. Perhaps the therapy helped them break through a previous 'learned' response and they are adapting to the new way of handling the stress. I will continue to use the stuff though, don't want to make them stress any more than necessary. Quote
courtnek Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 I maybe 1/3 soaked a cotton ball and rubbed it on both feet. You could definitely smell her feet from far away. This morning I gave her her tablet and used a lot less and a paper towel instead of a cotton ball. Dont know if it was related or not, but I had a severe insulin reaction last night and ended up in the hospital for about an hour. the extract was pretty heavy on my hands since it soaked thru the cotton ball. My blood sugar was normal, but I didnt come out of it until they had administered glucose. Much higher levels than normal, so I may have been stimulated as well. I am monitoring myself today as well as her. If it happens again we may need to put out a warning to diabetics and diabetic dogs. It could also have been a coincidence, but I am not a big believer in them. Quote
sarahmyjoy Posted June 28, 2004 Posted June 28, 2004 im gonna give this a try..... got the stuff at the store .... you should have seen the reaction sarah had to the peppermint.... kinda funny  she sniffed it and snorted  courtnek how are you doing with the reaction that you had? better i hope  Quote
courtnek Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 well, I had another one Sunday, although not as bad, and I used less extract and a paper towel instead of a cotton ball. I am now putting my hand in a plastic bag so none if it gets on my hands. weird....Laurel seems to be doing pretty good so far, but we havent had a household full of kids yet either. Quote
Carolk9s Posted June 29, 2004 Author Posted June 29, 2004 Oh Courtnek, I am worried, hearing about the insulin reactions you've had, it does sound too suspect. Did you talk to the dr. regarding the peppermint getting on your skin? The extract I use, made by Sauer's, contains Alcohol (84%), oil of peppermint, & tincture of peppermint. You are right, if ANY link is even suspected or possible, a warning needs to be added to this remedy. Quote
courtnek Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 he said he has never heard of it, but then again, he didnt know anyone using it to medicate a dog. and yes, the stimulant could have been the problem, since it absorbs easily thru the skin. Most people cook with it, and dont end up with it on their skin. He suggested the plastic bag. so far so good. I can work around it, but I would be leery of telling someone to try it without this warning. OR on a diabetic dog.... I had a LOT of it on my hands the first night, since it bled thru the cotton ball. I am being much more careful now. Quote
courtnek Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 mine is 89% alcohol, oil of peppermint and water. but it says "pure peppermint extract" on the bottle. Quote
courtnek Posted July 3, 2004 Posted July 3, 2004 well, I took her off the peppermint. it made her hyper to the max. but the Melatonin is working very well. she is calmer, not lethargic, but less afraid. she stillbarks and bays when startled. but no accidents. hoping hoping hoping... she has no fireworks fear, so maybe she didnt really need the peppermint... no thunder fear either. 8) Quote
StarFox Posted July 3, 2004 Posted July 3, 2004 Ahh! Stupid Fireworks! I HATE THEM! I wish they would make them illigal in my city like all the surrounding citys. Poor Zeb is so afraid of them. Today some morons were setting off bottle rockets while I was out and my dad had to stay with zeb in the kitchen all night because he was so scared. :( I hate the 4th of July! Quote
courtnek Posted July 3, 2004 Posted July 3, 2004 tonight and tomorrow are the big test for anyone wanting to try this. there will be fireworks going off all over the US all night. Quote
Carolk9s Posted July 4, 2004 Author Posted July 4, 2004 Fireworks ARE illegal for individuals in my county, does not stop the fool pool from setting them off. The ones that really terrify the dogs are the screamers, once they are scared, even the popping sounds make them nervous. The county/city does have fireworks displays, at the baseball diamond and I believe near the river. Those are far enough away that my dogs do not react, it's the idiots two doors down that cause a problem. A couple of years ago, we were smack in the midst of a fairly severe drought, do you think those morons considered that when they pulled out the fireworks? Nope. Very lucky no spark ignited, water tables were LOW and things were very dry around here. Quote
courtnek Posted July 4, 2004 Posted July 4, 2004 same here. The official ones are far enough away that it doesnt bother most dogs, it's the neighborhood kids with the bottle rockets and M80's that cause the problems. you cant buy them here (well, the bottle rockets, but that's it) but they sell them legally in wisconson and Indiana, so all it takes is a day trip to get them.
