Luka-pop Posted June 30, 2003 Posted June 30, 2003 Anybody here use a dog whistle to train their dogs? I just got one, but what are the things you can do with one? Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted June 30, 2003 Posted June 30, 2003 Luka! Long time no post! Welcome Back..... I've never tried a dog whistle before, nor have one. I think you use it to call a dog...... :D Quote
Angelboddy Posted June 30, 2003 Posted June 30, 2003 People that have herding dogs use them also. They use the different tones of the whistle to give different kinds of commands. Quote
courtnek Posted July 1, 2003 Posted July 1, 2003 they are very good for recall, especially if the dog is fairly far away. They carry better than the human voice. Quote
Luka-pop Posted July 1, 2003 Author Posted July 1, 2003 i'm glad to be back too! I have a break from horse shows until August. And it's summer vacation! How's everyone been doing? I wanted to teach Luka to come to it, just because we have woods that Luka wanders through. So if there was another person with a dog whistle around here, would Luka follow the wrong whistle? Quote
courtnek Posted July 1, 2003 Posted July 1, 2003 Is it a silent whistle or a hearable one? If silent, then yes, she might follow thw wrong signal. If hearable (to us at least - lol) you can vary the tone and teach her her own personal call. Like first high then low, or something like that. Quote
Luka-pop Posted July 1, 2003 Author Posted July 1, 2003 Yeah, it's hearable. But I don't understand the direction line, about setting it to your dog's pitch intensity. It all sounds the same to me and Luka's reaction doesn't seem to change with the different pitches. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 1, 2003 Posted July 1, 2003 around here, there's TONES of dogs, and so I've taught all mine the same call. Everyone around here uses that long short whistle (although I think there's only one person who uses dog whistles, and he owns gun dogs and hunts) and ours come to a whole bunch of short ones that are kina conected... it's hard to explain... but I don't think you can do that with a dog whistle, but you could do a whole bunch of short ones, whether their conected or not.
