Guest Anonymous Posted June 25, 2003 Posted June 25, 2003 Hi! I am from Michigan and I have been hearing about a new breed of dog that is great around kids and gets along with strangers, cats, and other dogs. It is called a Daisy Dog! Has anyone heard of this dog breed? If you have any ideas of what it may be or a breeder in the Michigan area please let me know! ~Columbo~ Quote
Rosebud Posted June 25, 2003 Posted June 25, 2003  You should look at the AKC web-site, if it's not there then it's not a breed, it's a cross-breed. Any dog can be trained for what you are wanting, some breeds are better with children and other dogs than others. Good luck, Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted June 25, 2003 Posted June 25, 2003 I'm sorry, but there is no such dog! :-? If you are looking for a dog, you can always ask us! :) We're a great bunch! Aren't we gals? 8) Quote

Sanvean Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 I've heard of Daisy Dogs...I also live in Michigan. They're a made-up breed, usually consisting of various smaller breeds, like poodles. Columbo, since Daisy Dogs are not a real breed, there can be no consistency with their behavior, looks, etc. You would be better off deciding what characteristics you want in a dog and then either deciding what breed you want, or going to a shelter or rescue and finding a dog who has those qualities. Here are some things to think about: How big a dog do you want? Is shedding OK? Does your dog need to be hypoallergenic? How much energy do you want your dog to have? Do you have kids? Do you have other dogs? Cats? Other pets? How trainable do you want your dog to be? Quote
meehs Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 It's not necessarily true that if a breed doesn't show-up on the AKC site that it's not a legitimate breed or it's a cross breed! Look at the breed list on Dogo! The AKC is notorious for dragging their feet when it comes to accepting new breeds. They only recently accepted the Jack Russel Terrier! This is a breed that has been around MUCH longer than some of the terriers that were already accepted! There are a lot of purebred dogs that have been around for a LONG LONG time that aren't accepted by the AKC. There are a lot of other organizations that have accepted breeds that the high and mighty AKC has not. I do have to say however that I've never heard of the Dasiy Dog. Quote

abker17 Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 Yes, the list here on Dogo is long, but I hate how dogo has non breeds like the labradoodle and cockapoo listed as breeds. :x :-? Quote
Rosebud Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 :D Meehs, I agree with you, that was a generalization made for the benefit of the guest. Most breeds that are not yet recognized by the AKC are pretty much guarded by their breeders. There are plenty of breeds AKC recognized or not) that are real breeds and not cross-breeds but I hardly think that anything called a Daisy Dog can be considered a breed, since it has a obviously $$$$ motivated name. Quote
meehs Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 I understand Rosebud, and I agree that some breeds are guarded by their fanciers so that they do not gain acceptance by the AKC. AKC acceptance is sometimes accompanied by a sudden increase in popularity of the breed and a big demand for puppies. This often results in a lot of irresponsible breeding that can be detrimental to the integrity of the breed. I didn't know that the dogo site lists Labradooles and Cockapoos though. Whatever! Quote

You wouldn't believe how many people I have met when I had my dogs with me that said "I saw one of them on T.V. on a dog show" with me knowing they are referring about when the RR made history by winning the hound group last year. They would then say, yeah I've been looking for one. They have no clue what it takes to be owned by an RR, dead give-a-away is when they don't call them by their breed name. I also have to explain to alot of people that IG's are not good dogs for people with small children, they're granny dogs. Quote
courtnek Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 I agree Rosebud!! other side of the coin, as I've said before, is that everyone thinks since my dog looks like a lab that she is a child magnet and they can run up and hug her!! I've never heard of a Daisy Dog (does it wear short-shorts, like Daisy Duke? lol) and I doubt even it was recognized by the AKC and others, that they would allow it to be called a Daisy Dog as a breed standard. I can only think of one that falls outside their naming convention - most of them are Something Retriever, pointer, hound, terrier; or like the RR, named after the country and the shape of it's back....the French Poodle, things like that...I dont know what Chihauhah means in Spanish, if anything, but maybe that's an exception too. The only one I can think of right off hand (correctl me if I'm wrong, of course) is the Papillion; which means butterfly in French....Kinda like the Chihahau maybe? Quote
Angelboddy Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 They have a city named Chihuaha in Mexico. I'm not sure if they named them after the City. But what I do know is they us to breed Chihuaha's as an aphrodisiac. That is what they were used for. :( Very sad and sickning. Quote
Sanvean Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 [quote name='"Rosebud"']I also have to explain to alot of people that IG's are not good dogs for people with small children, they're granny dogs.[quote] I was just saying on another thread that I really wanted an IG, but we are planning on having kids in a few years, so I knew it would be the wrong choice. I can't IMAGINE how anyone would think such delicate dogs would be appropriate for children! Of course, a lot of people think Maltese shouldn't be kept with small children, but Macy was raised with kids and ADORES them. And as we have three cats, too, I'm just going to have to be very cautious and really emphasize to our children the correct way to treat animals. Quote
Rosebud Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003  Sanvean - IG's are not as fragile as they look. My sister gave me Sandy and I called the breeder about her pedigree, whether it was show quality or not, she was thrilled that I was planning on showing her but got very uneasy when she found out her IG was living with a German Shepard and a Australian Shepard mix. She told me I couldn't let them play or her legs would get broken; 7 years later, and the last two spent with the RR's and I haven't had not one broken bone with her. She even ran full force into Rocket when he was 4 months old, and knocked herself out running into a tree chasing a squirrel, needless to say she has never chased a squirrel since. IG's are very nervous/skittish dogs and children are hyper and unpredictable around animals. No matter how well your dog behaves or how well it's socialized an IG will snap at or bite a child that won't leave it alone. Quote
