Ben has started to do a weird thing when he wants to "scare" something away (seagulls, dogs, cats...). Just a couple minutes ago, when I was out on our yard with Ben, another dog started barking somewhere. Ben started to bark and growl a little back and then he kind of kicked back grass with his hind legs and I have no idea what that means.

Do you know? Please tell me if you do.

He's spreading his own scent. There is scent in urine, saliva and also the pads of the feet. They kick to rub the scent off and then the air picks it up and carries it. He was probably responding to the other dog, and also warning the birds away. The growl means he smelled something he didnt like, (stranger in the area maybe?) and the scent flinging was to warn it off.

no. the spreading of scent has more uses than just mating. They use it to define territory, to declare themselves, to warn off other animals. The mating instinct is only one small part of it. They send pheremone messages every time they pee, salivate and rub the pads.

And no, they dont "cover it up" (cats do that) - they are trying to
send it all over!! lol

oooh! Ben doesn't do it after he has been using the bathroom, but only when he hears another dog bark or sees a cat or something on our back yard (or the neighbourghs) when he's out.

Dont worry Abker - everyone thinks that!! Cat's cover their scent because they were originally desert animals, no other scents to cover theirs...

Ben is obviously comfortable in his position as top dog of that yard...
only when something unknown comes up does he spread his scent, a warning - MY YARD! STAY OUT!

all dogs send scent - it's just part of their nature - to attract, to repel,
to warn....believe it or not, they send different scents for every situation.

Zebra just started to do that about two weeks ago. I think it's because the neighborhood cats come on our lawn and pee and poo all over the place and he hates cats! Anyways I'd rather have him kick up some dirt then pee on every tree that he see's!

My saint will do that type of marking occasionally! He is a funny guy...he likes to go to the farthest corner of the yard to do his business (unlike Max who thinks that any spot outside is a good spot) and usually when he finishes he just runs away. But sometimes he gets a wierd look on his face, puts his nose up in the air, and scrapes away at the grass with his hind feet. Believe me, the grass does fly! It's good to be far away!

Hippo does that too sometimes: she poops and then moves over (because she's really disgusted by how poop smells--any dog's, including her own  ) and then she kicks the grass a little. It's quite cute :D
