courtnek Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 I just found a stray - yellow lab, with teats, but no milk. Thin, eating everything in sight, has a collar on but no tags....friendly as can be, somewhat timid.....Freebee has sniffed her thru the door and so far no confrontations....I have called the police, in two different towns, and she has not been yet recorded missing. She has a sore on one of her paws, although not real serious looking. I dont want to have to have her taken away, because if no one claims her I want to keep her, but I havent introduced her formally to Freebee yet.... I dont know what to do!! She is SOOOO friendly, just wants attention... She doesnt look sick or extremely thin, her coat is well cared for and shiny, someone owned this dog and she hasnt been missing that long.... Quote
abker17 Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 That's almost exactly what happened when we got Abby, Courtnec. We were looking for a companion for Cracker, and it just so happened that one fateful evening, Abby came to us, running down the road chasing our car. If someone claims her, it wasn't ment to be, if someone doesn't.... then she is your new gift from God. :D Oh, and please post pics!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
Malamum Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 This may just be fate stepping in. I thought it was totally unreasonable for you to get turned down for those other dogs.... though maybe it was for a reason. This girl may need you which is why the others didn't work out. Quote
courtnek Posted June 21, 2003 Author Posted June 21, 2003 thanks Abker and Malamum - I had a REALLY bad moment there - I let her play with Freebee, they got along just wonderfully - running and playing - I had just decided I was going to keep her, when the phone rang. The owners had called the police. I almost lied and said she excaped, but then I thought "What if it was Freebee?" so I gave them my address and her owners came and picked her up....she has kids, and the kids were in tears that the dog was missing. Is God testing me? One good thing came out of it - I know that Freebee is not adverse to ALL dogs (I was beginning to think so) so I guess I'll just keep looking.... :( Quote
abker17 Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 Oh, I'm sorry Courtnec. :( U'll find that special dog soon, don't give up. Quote
bk_blue Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003  Sorry it didn't work out yet again Courtnek... at least the lab's owners cared enough to call the cops to try to figure out where their girl had gone. Keep looking. You will find a dog one day. Quote
courtnek Posted June 21, 2003 Author Posted June 21, 2003 OMD!!!! KARMA is back at the shelter!! (I started surfing again after the lab was gone) - they said he was only good with SOME dogs, but Freebee is only good with "some" dogs too.....he was adopted, and then the husband was transferred and cant take the dog, so he's back!! I am going to take Freebee tomorrow to meet him. This is TOO weird!!!! :drinking: Karma was one I wanted to adopt earlier on, but they said he wasnt good with all dogs and I worried about Freebee and her attitude, then he got adopted out.... Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 definitely let us know how it goes! and it's people like you who care enough to take in a dog and look for the owners that those kids will be grateful to forever. lady and my old lab ran off and the lab came back after for days but lady was still missing and we were all upset, long story but a man 6 miles away with a grandaughter had found her and really wanted to keep her but he kept looking, finally found us after two weeks and we were SO glad to have her home again. I really hope karma works out for you. :) Quote
courtnek Posted June 21, 2003 Author Posted June 21, 2003 thank you marble - I needed to hear that. The lady who owns her said "she does this all the time! she just takes off!" I asked her if she was aware that Labs run, plain and simple. Her dog (Sasha) is NOT spayed, and I said "if you spay her, her running will probably decrease" and she said "NOT paying for that!!" So I said "not having her spayed will increase the chance that she will run off, especially during heat.." "and then she will come home one day, pregnant..." and she actually said "the shelters wil take the puppies if necessary......" AAAARRRGGGHHH!!! GOD why are people so stupid????even SPAYED!! Labs run...it is in their nature to escape and wander the area.....mine does it whenever my son's friends leave the gate open...they are hunting dogs..open areas, fields, even neighborhoods are on their list of things to investigate... I AM SO UPSET WITH THIS..... that dog will get loose again, and probably be hit by a car on my street, which has a lot of trafffic...and there is NOTHING I can do about it...    Quote
abker17 Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 Some people! Geez, if she doesn't care if the dog runs off and gets hit, why'd she get a dog? People like that make me sooo mad!     Anyway, good luck tommorow, keep us updated! :) Quote
JackieMaya Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 Good luck with getting her! And I know what it's like to have a dog that likes to run. Maya would be gone in an instant if she wasn't tied up when she's in the back yard. I think it's the Husky in her that makes her a runner. Jackie wouldn't even think of going over the fence. If you have a dog that likes to escape, you have to find ways to deal with the problem. Some people! Really makes you mad when they don't care, doesn't it? Quote
Malamum Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 Oh I'm sorry you have to keep going through such heartache just to find a new dog. Think of it this way; this is just the short term, when you find that right dog it will be for the long term. Quote
IYPChrissie Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 Good Luck!! I hope it works out for you! Quote
LisaLQ Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 Also have a dog that likes to run - Sky if given the chance would happily scarper and run around the estate (she did once, but only because some kid had left the gate open and I didn't grab her when the doorbell went - I caught her again in 5 minutes but boy, what a fright!) - but now I know how to prevent that. And she is speyed. Good luck with Karma (the name sounds good, could be good karma *lol*) - and sorry about the lab. Lisa xxxx Quote
Daisysmom Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 Oh, I have been thinking about you!! Maybe this really is Karma!!! Your reward for being a good girl and returning the lab to her family  I really hope things work out for you!! Quote
behle Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 I'm hoping to hear good news, Courtnek!! How exciting that you get another chance at Karma! Quote
Peng1zrule Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 I'm sorry you had to encounter that awful woman...almost everyone in my neighborhood is exactly like that..."we'll just take the pups to the pound, they'll take 'em!" Just about the only time a dog is spayed around here is when she was hurt during the birth or breeding. Even then, they usually just dump her or have animal control pick her up. Some even shoot thier dogs. There's this poor black lab mix up the road...EVERY litter she has dies within the day. And they STILL WON'T SPAY HER!. It drives me nuts... Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 That's horrible Pengz1rule! Your poor thing, having to LIVE with these people!! :x I get these kind of people all the time, there's no changing thier mind! GOOD LUCK WITH KARMA COURTNEK!!!!!!!!!!!! :D Oh, I'm hoping for good news.... Remeber, if it was meant to be, it was meant to be... Quote
courtnek Posted June 21, 2003 Author Posted June 21, 2003 well, it didnt work out - Freebee and Karma just didnt really get along. But the good news is that I can come in any time and look over what they have, since I filled out the applications and all, and I've been "approved" (that cracks me up) to adopt a dog if one comes in that works out. I know that Freebee would eventually accept any dog I brought in, she didnt really like Alex at first either, but in a few days they were fast and good friends (the occasional dominance glitch, but that's to be expected) She is wary around most strangers and most other dogs. Her reaction to the lab really surprised me, because she took to her at once.... But I can see the shelters point of view as well. They dont know me, they have no reason to believe that the dogs will eventually get along...I know my dog, but they dont..... I started laughing when the lady said I had been approved. She looked kinda miffed, til I explained that I have been raising and training dogs for 30 years now....and all she could stammer out was 'Geez! You dont LOOK that old...." which just had me cracking up again..... I know that the right pup will come along....Maybe I should stop looking so hard and let him/her come to me.... thanks for all the kind words and support.. :) Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 SORRY YOU ARE HAVING A BAD TIME THE RIGHT ONE WILL TURN UP SOON Quote
Daisysmom Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 Sigh........ I thought this was it :( So sorry it didn't work out! Quote
