Poor Max is having a lot of trouble with his arthritis in his rear legs (his "knees"). The pain is so bad he is off his food and is not putting any weight on his right hind leg! So after trying Ascriptin for three weeks and not seeing any results I knew we had to try something else. Also, it appears he may have torn a ligament... :o I think from going up and down the d*** stairs when we had the in-laws staying with us. We couldn't shut the door and keep him out, because he spent his time moaning and whining at the door! He is VERY persistent when he wants something.

So today off we went to the vet where he got three x-rays and a referral to an orthopedic surgeon-the jury is still out on what, if anything, can be done for him. The pain has been so bad that he has lost SEVEN pounds in the past month because he won't eat when he hurts! He now has a month's supply of Deramaxx - on the lowest possible dose.

I am now on the lookout for any adverse reaction. I did some talking to the vet and some research on the internet and I will be watching him closely! :-? My hope is that he won't suffer any complications and his pain gets relieved... He was such a good boy at the vet! :D

How could I not want the owner of this face to get better?

Behle, I know what it's like with Rosie's recent problems, you rack your brains to try to find something to help them and feel so helpless if it doesn't work out. :( Then start searching for the next thing to try.

I hope and pray that Max is soon pain free and enjoying his food again. And you're right, nobody could resist a face like that, he's a very handsome man. :D

 I've go a stair lift for sale if you're interested.

Marion - With my luck Max would be scared of the stair lift but Ben would hop on and take it for joy rides all day, running the electric bill up!

Thanks all, for your well-wishes for my Maxwell! It is hard to see him suffer. He raises his head and "licks the air" when it's really hurting...
He hasn't done that yet tonight after his first dose! :)

I wish you hadn't told us about him licking the air, I can't stop thinking about it now, :( poor Max :( You're like me, we get that way that we watch for the signs all the time. I constantly follow Rosie round to see if she scratches herself. It's good that he's not done that since his medication

And if the stair lift would of helped, I'd of sent it on my magic carpet, no charge.

Did your Vet indicate weather it may be a torn cruciate ligament? if so; that can be repaired, one of my Newf's went through surgery for cruciate ligament 3 years ago ...she came through the surgery fine (with a big Vet bill) and although Arthritis did set in I have her on Yucca, MSM, Glucosamine & Chondroitin, Vitamin C...it seems to be working for her and for my Rottie which has HD and arthritis in her front legs due to calified deposits is on the same pills...before starting any alternative remedies of course be sure you don't give them to your dog along with the med's your vet has given you unless your Vet advises you other wise. Arthritis is some thing you can deal with naturally....a torn cruciate ligament of course has to be repaired. I wish you both the best and let us know Max is doing.
Ps: if you do put her on natural remedies, the Yucca should be used with caution...only a little bit should be put in your dogs food...I break open one capsole (it's powder) and just put a 1/2 pinch in my Rotties food & Newf's food...you can then put the capsole back together.

Yes...I am finding that out, Mouse. Today I signed up on a rottweiler forum to ask for information about Deramaxx and leg problems. I got a lot of responses....Poor Max. He does seem a little better today; I think the pain medication is helping. But when he walks you can see that there is structurally something wrong with his leg. :o

So I will call the vets tomorrow and see if they have talked to the ortho vet yet. This morning Max did come flip his ball up on the bed to wake me up! He hasn't done that for a couple of weeks.

Cassie - thanks for the helpful info!
