Here's some interesting news...

In Denmark, dogs are vaccinated against hepititis, parvo, and distemper. Rabies is not necessary unless they are used for hunting out in the country, but it has never been a problem in Copenhagen.

The mosquitoes here do not carry heartworms so a heartworm preventative is not necessary.

The hardest part of the trip...it is required by the Danish goverment that a computer chip be put under the dog's skin...it's about the half size of one Norplant stick if you are familiar with those. It's good because if the dog is ever lost, he can be identified, but that was the only part of the visit that the dogs really didn't like.

They both got a clean bill of health!

I asked the vet about the best food for them and he recommended something made by IAMS...whatever the kind is that starts with EU...i told him i didn't want to give that to them because I had read bad things about IAMS. I would like more information on that brand and why it's bad if anyone can provide that for me.

It's bad because it's highly priced for an average quality food. And apparently they do some pretty mean things to animals to test their food, but I'm questionning that at the moment. Still wouldn't pay twice as much for a so-so food, when you could pay less and get one better
Nutro, Autarky, Burns - all better than IAMs or Eukanuba. :D
(by the way some vets recommend it because they sell it)

Great news about them passing their healthchecks :D

thanks Lisa...i will check for those brands here...denmark doesn't have a lot of variety to offer when it comes to pet foods or even people food for that matter

i would like some information to give to my vet regarding IAMS...it's the only thing he sells except for something with prescription in the name...i am looking for something that naturally cleans and/or protects their teeth

Just what I was about to say :-?

Another note on this:

Most vets rely on the distributers/manufacturers/researchers to tell them what the best stuff is. They also rely on other vets experience with the food. Most vets are not nutritionists and tend to recommend what they sell.
That's the one thing I don't like about my vet, he recommends Science Diet for my RR's when I have done my research and know that Eagle Natural or Holistic is the best for them.

It's Eukanuba - Iams owns Eukanuba, and since most vets will recommend either those, or Science Diet, Iams makes a killing.

there are issues with the tests they did on dogs to determine muscle and
tissue growth after being fed Iams/Eukanuba....From what I understand it is in litigation now....and yes, vets will recommend the food that they get "kick-backs" for...a good vet will not sell the food unless he believes it is a good food....but there are a lot of bad vets. And others really believe it is a good food.

It's business as usual....

Just FYI - neither of my dogs could eat either Iams or Eukanuba - it upset them badly. My cat requires Iams because its the only old cat food
that will stay down, and not cause hairballs, so for his sake, I do buy it.

he cant eat any wet food, or people food at all..and I have tried other brands of cat food, none of them work for him.

I was feeding Eukanumba (mainly because we don't have much choice in the premium foods) and I would consider it an average food. No where near as bad as some of the ultra cheap supermarket brands but it is quite expensivie for what you get. So with that in mind I switched to Innova.

i asked the vet for something that was healthy for their teeth...he said the Eukanuba had something on the kibbles that was healthy for the teeth...he looked surprised when i mentioned the animal testing...i can't be sure if he knew or not...perhaps the news just hasn't reached denmark...

i believe he also sells something called prescription plan ?? has anyone heard anything about that brand?

also, if anyone has a link to an article about Eukanuba, i would like to forward it on to my vet

Hills Science Diet is prescription plan, isn't it? Can anyone confirm that, I've never bought it - way too expensive for me

Here's the link for the pet foods tested on animals:

Autarky is a great food but I think you can only get that in the UK.

CSJ is similar, in that it's a working dog food, that I believe can be used for pets, and I think there is a stockist in Denmark.
As I've never used CSJ (but know people who have) I cant personally say from experience whether it's suitable for your dogs or not, but I'm sure they'll be able to help. And it's cheap too - but as for quality, although I've seen it compared to Autarky, and Autarky is great, I cant say myself as I've never used it. Might be worth asking for a sample? CSJ also make herbs to add to your dogs food. Here's their link, if that helps:

Denmark stockist - Finn Petersen Tel: 0045 76 700 741

Hope that helps a little :)

I am going to assume that Hills Science Plan is the same as Hills Science Diet?
I keep hearing that Science Diet is garbage and a horrible food etc etc. Maybe it is, maybe it's changed since I used it a few years ago. Science Diet Adult Dry food did WONDERS for my Belgian Sheepdog Jesse. He carried good weight, had a lovely coat and skin, was VERY energetic and had no problems with it. Maybe this is as much due to his breeding but the ONLY medical issue I have had with Jesse in his almost 12 years of life is that he has a low thyroid. Low thyroid is not at all uncommon in Belgians.
The years that I was feeding Science Diet were the years Jesse and I were most active in dog agility. We did very well in the ring so his strength and stamina were right where they should have been. Of course not every food is right for every dog, this is just my personal experience, Science Diet worked very well for Jesse.

All of my dogs only eat the Raw Food Diet ...... I personally would never go back to kibble, even with my pregnant dog.

There are many good kibbles, Innova, Canidae, Eagle Pack etc. The Whole Dog Journal does an indepth study on kibble and Iams, Eukanuba, Pedigree and Science Diet are rated the worst. They put no whole products and mostly by-products in their food ...... meaning what goes into their food is what is not fit for human consumption...... Yuck!

I have heard both good and bad things on Iams, Eukanuba and Science diet. depends on which article you read.

I dont like Iams testing strategy, which I understand they have agreed to stop. And I have to feed my cat Iams because nothing else will stay down,
so I wrote letters and stuff.

I feed my dog Purina Lamb and Rice. She is very healthy, has a beautiful
coat, and clear eyes. A lot of people have told me that Purina is junk food,
but the lamb and rice one works wonders on Freebee. It just depends on the dog.
