I have just acquired a female ridgeback who arrived by airline last night.
She is full of scars on her back and sides. She is 2 1/2 years old, has had 2 litters already and came from a puppy mill. Her las litter was April 1, 2003. Her teets hang.

I am wondering what I can do to help the scars blend in, fade, heal better - or what.

Also are these teets hanging normal - what can I do to help them shrink better - or do they just hang?

Will go to the vets later this week - but am just wondering. Hard to find a real Ridgeback vet in alaska. Last one said sure - no problem and they didn't have a clue.

Thanks.

I don't know about the teats but there is a people medication for scars called Mederma, it works great on people and I am sure you could ask a vet or maybe the manufacturer if it is okay for dogs. It does say it is not intended for use on open wounds but it really does work well and I think you can get it at most drugstores without a prescription.

It's manufactured by Merz Skin Care Products, Greensboro, NC 27410

Here are the ingredients in case someone here more knowledgable can tell you if it is okay :)

Water(purified), PEG-4, Onion (allium cepa), xanthan gum, allantoin, fragrance, methylparaben, sorbic acid.

Good luck to you and it's awesome that you adopted your new girl. Feel free to post some pictures of her :)

When my pup got bitten and had a few bite marks on her cheeks, the vet gave us a veterinary ointment called Hibitane--don't know if you can get from a petstore, or just from the vet. It works very well though...

when she is out of milk, and it may take another month or so, her teats will probably tighten up. Not sure about the scars. If they are old scars, you may be stuck with them, although an apbt owner once told me about a product available from Omaha Vet Vaccine that is "garunteed" to heal scars and regrow hair. If they are still wounds, and not scars, keep them clean, apply lots of neosporin, and keep your fingers crossed!

Yes vitamin E capsules you can get them al walgreens they are really cheap pop them open and sqeeze the syrup on the scars, had to do that a few years ago on some badly cut Dobie puppy ears. it worked really well.

To all who replied, I am now giving my girl 3 tbs of Solid Gold Flax Seed oil with lots of the Omega 3, 6, and 9 in it. Her coat is perking up already.
I am using Bag Balm for right now on the scars on her back, and her teats seem to be 'retracting'. With some weight loss, good food and care - I think she will turn into a wonderful, beaufitul gal.

Thank you all so very much.
