JackieMaya Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 Today I was sitting at my table in the backyard when Jackie and Maya went running over to the fence. Jackie was sniffing at something and Maya was barking like crazy. I could see that it was some kind of animal, but couldn't tell until I was right up to the fence that it was a HUGE turtle! :WTF: We live four houses from a lake, and I guess the turtle just decided to take a stroll and came to a dead stop when he got to the fence. The turtle had a bunch of lake goo on him so I put on my work gloves, picked him up and walked to the lake and let him go. When I got back, my girls were barking and crying, wondering where I had gone. And once I got back in the yard, Jackie kept going over to the spot by where the turtle had been and started crying, wondering where that weird thing went! We've had lots of ducks in our front yard in the past that came up from the lake, but that's the first time I've ever seen a big turtle come up from the lake! I'm just glad he stayed on the other side of the fence! Quote
Angelboddy Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 My baby-dog would probally be the same way. She thinks that every type of animal would play with her. The only problem is they all run from her. She just wants a friend to play with :( Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 A TURTLE? :o That is sooo weird! Sorry, can't help laughing, a huge turle, two dogs, one barking and one sniffing, and one VERy confused you! I wonder how the TURTLE felt! :o Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 The poor turtle he must have had shock :scared: Quote
courtnek Posted June 14, 2003 Posted June 14, 2003 I had a pond turtle (well, my son did) that got be about 8 inches around and I have seen those really big lake turtles....My dogs were always fascinated by the turtle too....wanted to sniff it, and pick it up, I had to rescue him a few times when he escaped from his tank....lol must just be a reptile thing - they are so different from mammals, maybe the dogs just dont understand...... :D Quote
Holz_Boomer Posted June 14, 2003 Posted June 14, 2003   Sorry To Laugh..But It Sounds Like A Funny Situation! Quote
courtnek Posted June 14, 2003 Posted June 14, 2003 Jackie, make sure you either got rid of or washed the gloves in hot water with bleach.... I just remembered this - turtles carry salmonella, altho it doesnt affect them. You're always supposed to wash with hot water whenever you handle one. sorry I was so late getting this to you.. :( Quote
Holz_Boomer Posted June 16, 2003 Posted June 16, 2003 SORRY Pamela/...i can't help u there :( i feed my dogs purina pro plan and they LOVE it Quote
Peng1zrule Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 LOL! I have pet turtles...I had to train the dogs to leave them alone...although, since these are wild turtles, they hibernated, and Gypsy disobeyed me the day before I buried the turtles...I thought they were dead 'cause i picked them up and couldn't get them to respond to me. Gypsy was pawing and whimpering at the terrarium, so when I went to pull her way...lo and behold...the turtles were awake. Can you imagine if she HADN'T disobeyed me? Quote
JackieMaya Posted June 19, 2003 Author Posted June 19, 2003 Courtnek, thanks for the advice about getting rid of the gloves. I hadn't thought of that! They're in the garage, out of the dogs' way, but I'll throw them out! Quote
