Guest Anonymous Posted June 8, 2003 Posted June 8, 2003 I have a dauchsund/chichuahua who mated with a medium size dog that was rat terrier/blue heeler. I am disabled and live on a disability stipend. The thing I am worried about is whether she is going to be able to have them without being in major distress, or without it killing her. Could someone please tell me? Quote
abker17 Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 I can not tell U that, but U need to take her to a vet, or get someone to take her to a vet for U. The vet can help U through-out the pregnacy. Sometimes the vet can help U deliver the pups. After the pregnacy, please get your dog spayed. There are all ready millions of dogs in pounds looking for homes. It is terrible that many of the dogs have to put to sleep, because no one wants them. There are free clinics in most areas that will spay your dog for free, if U cannot afford it. Quote
courtnek Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 depends on the dog. how much difference is there in the sizes? medium covers everything from 40-60 lbs. If the puppies take after the bigger dog, then, yes, there could be major distress requiring a c-section, and it could kill the mother dog. May I ask, why isnt she spayed? Since you are on disability pension, there are lots of places covered by the spca and shelters that would do the spaying at a reduced rate - in some places, for free. I dont mean to sound harsh, but there are already plenty of unwanted puppies in the world. The way to prevent that is to neuter and spay. Since she is not a purebred, and the puppies are not monetarily "valuable" you should have her spayed. She now needs to see a vet to determine whether this pregnancy could kill her or not. Call the ASPCA and see what they can do. Please!! For the sake of the mother dog!! Quote
Horsefeathers! Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 From a financial standpoint, spaying her NOW would be much cheaper than a difficult pregnancy and delivery which could quite possibly lead to an emergency spay, anyway. The end result will be the same except for the pain and possible death of the mother and pups, but a spay NOW would be a whooooooole lot cheaper. I would suggest exploring your resources to see if there is anything in your budget that you could do without for now, or if there is anyone or business that you could possibly borrow the money from. If you have a particular skill or trade that you can barter, some vets will barter off services (we bartered some painting and fencing for a major surgery for one of our dogs... was much easier than seeing the money come out of pocket). Basically, you will either have to pay a little now, or possibly a LOT later. My suggestion is to have the dog spayed ASAP and not have a coin toss as to whether or not the dog may or may not have a difficult time. Spaying early in a pregnancy is not usually any more difficult or much more costly than a routine spay. Again, the longer you wait, the more expensive it will get. Quote
Aroura Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 For gods sake, spay the poor dog now!!!! I don't mean to sound harsh, but you really should have got her done long before she even came into her first heat. If not for the sake of the dog, please spay her for the sake of your wallet, cuz you'll be sorry if you don't! Quote

Guest Anonymous Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 I agree with the others -- end the pregnancy now before your dog is in serious distress. If you don't have funds, there are some groups. like www.help-a-pet.org, that can help. You might also contacting your local humane society to see if they have a low-cost spay/neuter program. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 It is not uncommon for a bitch to die in regular whelp, much less whelping pups from a larger breed dog. The extra small breeds already have a tough enough time whelping, I can't imagine wanting to risk this. Please spay your dog, there are enough pups in the world. Even if she were to whelp out fine, are you capable of helping her through whelp and raising the pups for at least 8 weeks? Raising puppies is a lot of work. Please, as suggested, have her spayed now. Quote
gooeydog Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 Even a shelter will likely do a spay on her, as part of thei low cost clinic. If you decide to let her have the pups, you better find some other source of money though, as c-sections and the hospital care required before/afterwards can easily run up into the thousands. Quote

I do reccomend spaying her........................ If you can not be aware of your bitch in season and suitably keep her safe, then spaying is your best option. Please keep us inform  ed Quote
