Guest Anonymous Posted June 7, 2003 Posted June 7, 2003 My vet recently gave me a script for Deramaxx for my 13 year old Siberian husky. Friends of ours who have a 14 year old husky say they just give their dog one baby asprin a day for her arthritis. The Deramaxx seems to work well but is quite expensive. Does anyone have an opinion on the baby asprin? Does it work? Thanks. Quote
imported_Cassie Posted June 7, 2003 Posted June 7, 2003 Buffered Aspirin is good to give to a dog with Arthritis...here is an article for your reveiw which gives other alternative forms of non-prescription methods of how to deal with Athritis and the older dog...good luck :) http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1569&articleid=485 Quote
imported_Cassie Posted June 7, 2003 Posted June 7, 2003 I also wanted to add, my dog has severe hip dysplasia...I currently have her on Shark Cartiledge (I used to use Gluc/Chron I am just trying this out..there is also a herb remedy called joint remedy for humans that alot of people swear by also I also giev her her MSM and Yucca for pain...the Yucca I take one capsole and open it up and just sprinkly a tiny tiny amount on her food...you don't want to over do it as it can have the reverse effects. courtnek Posted June 7, 2003 Posted June 7, 2003 again, you have to be very careful with aspirin in dogs. A kidney analysis should be done first - aspirin has been known to cause kidney failure in dogs. this is the same post by two different people with the exact same dogs and friends? :-? Quote
Rosebud Posted June 10, 2003 Posted June 10, 2003  well even if we have trolls again it's a good topic. My vet told me that the proper dosage for dogs is one-tenth of 1 cc/mg for every pound of body weight. He recommends children's tylenol as it is less irritating on their stomachs and my pups love the grape flavored one. Quote
DogPaddle Posted June 12, 2003 Posted June 12, 2003 Rosebud - Tylenol - really? My vet, when giving instructions for Tyr's hip displasia (4rth grade) said ASA only - he was emphatic but didn't mention why, now I really wish I'd asked. Wonder why the differing opinions. Quote
Mary's Mama Posted June 12, 2003 Posted June 12, 2003 :o NO TYLENOL OR ADVIL (acetominaphen or ibuprophen) Both are toxic!! see this article: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1937&articleid=2226 Also, be careful with long term use of aspirin. It will cause liver damage. An occasional dose is acceptable but daily long term sustained use is detrimental. The gluco/chond, shark cartilage, MSM and yucca should be enough. It may take a few months to see the full effects though. Quote
alicat613 Posted June 15, 2003 Posted June 15, 2003 Deramaxx has a 13% fatality rate in reported incidents, and is formulated as a POST operative painkiller. It's being touted as the new safe drug to replace Rimadyl but brings many new threats to the table. Ask your vet for something else if possible, or why she chose this drug for your animal. Ascriptin is a brand often recommended as it comes in 5 grain (325 mg) the easiest size for dosing dogs (in quarter, half or whole pills depending) and is buffered with Maalox. Call your vet and check about the safety of aspririn and dosage for your particular dog. Quote
courtnek Posted June 15, 2003 Posted June 15, 2003 I was also told no Tylenol, no Advil, no Excedrin, no Alieve....my vet will ok aspirin (childrens aspirin only) only after a kidney and liver analysis. Some dogs do ok with it, others have kidney/liver problems. Quote
imported_Cassie Posted June 16, 2003 Posted June 16, 2003 One of my Newfoundlands which I had to have PTS before x-mas (she was 14 yrs just a few months shy of 15 yrs) she had suffered from Arthritis and was in excruciating pain...she developed arthritis at the tender age of 7yrs, at that time Gluc/Chon was not heard off...I started out with Buffered Aspirin then I tried Acupuncture (which did not help her) I was at wits end....then a friend of mine who owns horses (I find horse people to be very knowledgeable about alternative remedies) suggested I use the Gluc/chon...after a few months of use she was like a puppy again...I have never used any aspirin or Rimidyl, Metacam for any of my dogs which have developed arthritis since. My Rottie who has HD - arthritis of course has developed in her hip area...I have never had to resort to prescription drugs or aspirin...instead only using the Shark Cart, MSM and Yucca...when I have her on Gluc/Chon. I give her a vitamin C pill to aid in the uptake of the Gluc. The Yucca is doing a wonderful job keeping her from suffering from the pain of arthritis...when I first suspected she had HD she had problems getting out of bed in the morning whining and yelping...and this was a 2 year old dog ...I had her hips x-rayed..the vet prescribed me a bottle of Metacam..I have not had to use that med. which also is a burden to the dogs liver...I find that some times when a dog is prescribed an anti-inflammatory med. that it some times masks the pain so the dog keeps doing the same activities which cause the inflamation. I have had great success with Glucosamine Chondroitin....I feel safer using it as it is natural...for any of you who are suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis your self...try it, it works great!
