:-?

They are back. I can't belive it, they are actually back!

The ticks! They're back! They are actually, truly, really, back!

Not the big ones like last time, no, these are small baby ones that are really hard to see. They are already on Rowie's ear, and on her belly. :-?

I can't belive this! I took her to the vets to get her clipped and remove ALL the ticks, she's on a flea and tick collar 24/7, she has a special substance we shower her with everyday until the bottle finishes, and soon we are getting the garden sprayed for ticks and other insects. We also mowed the lawn, and today we're getting a bug zapper.

So HOW on EARTH did they come back?! I've done everything! EVERYTHING I can! What are these ticks? Cockroaches in disguise?

The only possible reason is that maybe the vets didn't remove EVERY SINGLE tick, so one of them laid eggs, and walla! And that maybe these new baby ticks are immune to the collar and other medications...

BUT HOW ON EARTH CAN THAT POSSIBLY HAPPEN?!

What am I doing wrong here? :-? Am I THAT bad a owner? :( I can't even get TICKS off my own dog!

Oh those stupid ticks, I got Rowie CLIPPED! I sacrificed ALL her beautiful silky fur!

PLUS she's going to the Boarding Kennels today, but I don't think I can take her because she has ticks! They might get onto the other dogs or something...

What do I do now? I have nothing else, no other medication to turn to! Should I go to my Aunties this time? (For those of you who don't know about my auntie, she has some kind of tick dip that kills all the ticks on the animal) I'm really confused...

All this STRESS! Not only do I have stress from these darn ticks, but also exams, due assignments, my grandfather(who is sick), summer school... Etc. :(

Any ideas? Should I go to my aunties and order off the internet? If my mother sees the seriousness of this problem, I'm sure she'll alow me to order off the internet!

Thanks guys, I knew I could come to you for help!

Sorry the evil ticks are back
I don't think you should go to your aunt's now because Rowie has scabs and many substances shouldn't be put on open sores, scabs, etc. Can you call the vet's place and ask them how come the ticks are back, and what should you do--that is, what can you use on Rowie to get rid of them? I'm sorry I can't really help... But maybe somebody else will know better.

What about the stuff that you put between the dog's shoulder blades like "Revolution" or "Frontline"? Have you tried anything like that? I've heard that it works well. I've never tired it myself. Tick collars are worthless from my experience!

Thank you all!

Well, we called the vet, she said that the substance that we use to rid Rowie of the ticks (the one after the showers) can be used as a pesticide too. She said we spray it on our garden. :-? I'm not sure, but that seems wierd to me....

Well, she's not going to the boarding kennels... :( The poor baby, I know she would have loved it!

Meehs, the problem is, I live in Bahrain, where you can get NO doggie products... :( Only the basics like beds, leashes, collars, flea and tick collars(which are useless! ) Etc. Other stuff are really rare, but there is this really good pet store(against puppy mills) here that has most of the things I need, I don't know what I'de do without it! :(

I feel so sorry for my Rowie Pooh, she looks so pathetic... :(

Ok, so since I can't go to my aunts, what should I do? Here is what I'm going to do so far:

1) Get someone to spray the garden with a pesticide. (and keep her in the house too! I told my mom already, we're going to keep her in an X-pen in my room while I'm not there so she won't disturb my grandfather).

2) Get a bug zapper( doesn't help much does it?) :-?

3) Order "Frontline" or something like that from the internet... I don't care what my mom sais!

4) Take her to the vet!

Just a question, since she has all these scabs, won't it irritate her skin if I put "Frontline" on? Or any other flea/tick product?

I feel so confused.... :(

Thanks guys for helping me out in my time of need! I love you all!

First, the little ticks getting on your dogs are normal ticks...once they engorge them selves with your dogs blood...then they get big, when they have fed and engorged them selves, then they detach from your dog fall on the ground and find some nice dead leaves or grass or any where and lay their eggs...they ticks go through life cycles then they crawl up branches or bushes and your unsuspecting dog (or even human) walks by they sense the warmth and fall onto the host...and start to feed...quite a little life cycle. It is very important to kill all the eggs the engorged adults layed in your yard.

In severely tick-infested areas or for dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors and in the woods, we have found a Preventic Tick Collar in addition to a permethrin-containing product such as Bio Spot is going to give your dog the best protection. This collar contains Amitraz, which is FDA approved to use in conjunction with most other flea and tick products. With the Preventic Collar, 95% of the ticks will detach and die within 24 hours.

Remember, with any tick preventative you use on your pet, the ticks must actually be in contact with the active ingredient to be killed by it. For instance, if you only use a tick collar, you may see ticks attached and feeding on the dog, even directly under the tick collar. This has to happen for the tick to take in the insecticide and die. A good tick collar will kill the tick in 24 hours or less. This greatly reduces the risk of tick-transmitted diseases since it generally requires more than 24 hours of attachment for disease to be transmitted.

Even a pet who is treated with an insecticide could potentially get a tick that attaches for a sufficient time to transmit disease. Vaccines for Lyme Disease for dogs are available to provide that extra protection.

Revolution, which contains selamectin, is a monthly topical product that controls American Dog Ticks (Dermacentor variabilis) only

I just wanted to add this...if you do not have American Dog Ticks in your area Revolution will be of no use to you...there are many different kinds of ticks...for example the deer tick carries Lyme disease...that is why areas that do not have that kind of tick do not have problems with Lyme disease.
here are some different types of ticks.

Amblyomma americanum is the Lone Star Tick and is found throughout the South, east of the Rocky Mountains.

Amblyomma maculatum is the Gulf Coast Tick, and that is where it resides.

Dermacentor albipictus is also called the 'Winter tick,' 'Moose Tick,' or 'Elk Tick' and is found in the northern and western United States as well as Canada.

Dermacentor andersoni is the Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Tick and transmits the deadly disease for which it is named.

Dermacentor variabilis is one of the most famous of all. Its name is also the American Dog Tick and lives in the entire eastern 2/3 of the United States.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus is the king of ticks. It is called the Brown Dog Tick and is a serious threat to kennels anywhere in the United States.

Ixodes scapularis is a tiny little tick with a huge threat. It is also known as the Deer or Black-legged Tick. It has one claim to fame and that is it transmits Lyme disease.

All of the above are 'hard-shelled' ticks. There are more, but these are the most frequently encountered.

The soft-shelled ticks or Argasids are fewer in number. The one most known is Otobius megnini also known as the Spinose Ear Tick. It is most common in the Southwest and as one might guess, loves to attach itself and feed on ears

Definitely consult your vet to make sure that a topical treatment like "Frontline" is safe to use when your dog has scabs and sores like you mentioned. It actually enters the animal's bloodstream so I don't think it would be a problem.

As far as the bug-zapper goes, it won't do any good at all because they only work for flying insects like mosquitos and flies, etc... Ticks crawl on the ground and in plants and trees. Spraying an insecticide is the only way that I've heard to control them.

Good luck!

I really do feel bad for you....dealing with ticks in your yard or home can seem like a never ending battle (especially in the climate you are living in) . We had a cleint at the grooming shop which had a tick infestation in her house! yuk! she brought her li ttle Shih Tzu in and we removed 10 ticks from its head and neck area...
good luck...

Yes, Rowie, keep at it, it sound to me like you're trying all that you can. Because there are so many ticks in your area, even after you disinfect the yard, and Rowie, I think you'd still need to order off the intrenet (or from a catalogue) one of the preventives--so that you and Rowie don't go through this again. And before you order, ask the vet if Frontline (which seems to be good against ticks) can be applied on Rowie in her condition... If not, then what else does s/he recommend?
Good luck with everything.

Have you removed the ticks you found with some tweasers?
You need to get those nasty little ticks off her too.
If she is not outside for now then she will be a lot less likely to get more ticks on her.
As far as the frontline goes, I noticed a lot of that stuff is like some kind of oil base. I bought advantage to put on my dog and it smelled like baby oil. I would ask your vet first before buying some, just to be on the safe side. For now, you can try puting any kind of cooking oil down her spin. My vet told me that it works pretty well, because it will smother them and they don't like the very faint smell. I sure hope thing work out for you and we will be thinking about you both.
Oh, and give rowie a big hug and kiss for me. :calus:

:x :x :x Darn ticks!!

Don't know about Bahrain, but where I am the weather is ALWAYS hot (25-35 degrees celcius) and humid!! :-? But Frontline Spot-on works for us. Good luck Rowie!

We have had a problem with ticks too :x We took the dogs to a nature preserve and they and WE came back with ticks!!!!!!! and we were only there for a short time. They are very, very bad this year!!!

I took them to the groomers for a flea/tick bath and the next day or so after taking them for a walk around here, Daisy came back with another!!! We have found a few on them after the bath :-? I think they are in our yard too, and my hubby has put down a pesticide!!

We will have to be very diligent it keeping them away and checking them!

Good luck!!!

Thank you all, my eyes are watering because never have I met a group of people so nice and understanding. Who actually UNDERSTAND when I talk about my dog and my concernes, and who actually LISTEN! Thank you all...

Rowie's ticks have (thankfully!) reduced in number, I guess it's the medicine... I also removed some with tweezers(don't worry, I got EVERYTHING right and even burned the ticks in alcahol ) I'm going to call the vets soon, and then take Rowie over there. I'll ask her all the Q's....

Also, we're going to spray the garden with Pesticide. My mom called the guy who did it for us last time(for the ants! :o) and he said sure. During that time Rowie will stay inside with us! YEA! :D

Things have DEFINATLY improved!

Thank you all! Where would I be without your help? It's making me cry just thinking about how supportive you have been to me... I love you all!

Good for you! your first kill!!!!
I only advise that unlike deer hunters etc...tick hunters should not stuff and mount their first kill for display for freinds and family in the rec room.
Just keep at it as Daisysmom mentioned the ticks and fleas do seem to be getting worse as each year passes...I have never had the problems in the past with ticks as I have had the last 2 summers... I usually go over my dogs with a fine tooth comb (exaggeration) when we get back from walks and I have to check my cats over daily also.
Its a difficult thing to do, dealing with ticks...but I'm glad your not letting it get you down.

Ohh Rowie gets to stay in the house with you while they are spraying the garden?! Ohh that is great!!! I dunno who will be more happy, you or rowie!

Oh I'm soo glad that everything is working out for you!! I've been worried about Rowie and you...

Oh and I don't think there will be a problem with rowies hair growing back..although it might take some time. We had to shave a six by six inch patch off of zebra's side because he had an Evil tick too. :eviltongue: But it's taking some time for the hair to grow back. He has a naked spot.

Oh and Congrats on your first kill! :P

Keep us updated, ok? :)
