There has been a lot of talk about breeding these days, and of homeless animals, and of Labs. So I went to Pet Finder, and just scribbled in any zip code, and was astonished at the number of Lab/Lab mixes I found! I knew there was an over ubandance of Labs, and that there was a problem with Labs and stuff, but never did I expect to see so many Labs/Lab mixes...

Here's the site for anyone who is intersted:

http://www.petfinder.org/pet.cgi

And here is a pet that seems really sweet, if anyone lives in Hillsborough, or is willing to drive there for this little guy. He seems like the perfect pet!

Notes: What a cutie! Calvin is new to our shelter, but quickly becoming a favorite to all!!! He's approximately 1-2 years old, weighs about 45 lbs, has short hair, sheds very little and is just a happy fellow. He loves people, would be great with older kids, and seems to not mind the other dogs and cats he is around. He has a gentle, friendly nature, not a mean bone in his body. He would truly be a great pet!!! He is in Hillsborough, so just give Leslie a call to meet this special guy at 908-218-1939, or fill out an application below.

CHIP'S STORY
Dog
Labrador Retriever,Terrier Mix

Size: Medium
Age: Young
Sex: Male
I.D:

Notes: Chipper came to us about 9 mths ago when he was only a puppy. He is fully grown now, about 1 1/2 years old and about 40 lbs. He spent this past weekend with one of our foster families; we wanted to give this poor guy a break from kennel life and to see how he would behave in a family environment. Well, Chip passed with flying colors! He was friendly and loving to the family and their 12 yr old son. Chip was easy to walk, sat patiently while the family ate their meals, slept soundly in bed w/their son, only barked when the doorbell rang, doesn't shed and was a joy to have. He was playful like a puppy at times and a "lap dog" (as you can see from the picture) at other moments. Chip's problem is that when people come to see him, he races out of his cage and jumps and kisses them; so happy to be out. The first impression of him can be overwhelming. Once out of the kennel environment however, Chip is a terrific dog. He would be a loyal companion if someone would give him a chance. Please call Leslie in Hillsborough to meet this super pup! 908-218-1939, or fill out an application below.

Also in Hillsborough, NJ.

Heres another one!

Spackle
Dog
Boxer,Terrier Mix

Size: Medium
Age: Young
Sex: Male
I.D:

Notes: WHAT A CUTIE!!! Spackle was rescued from a kennel in Newark within hours of being euthanized because of lack of space for him. Luckily, we had a spare cage for this fellow. He is young, only about 1 or 2, and doesn't have a mean bone in his body. He would be great with kids and probably other dogs and cats too. He's mostly white with one black eye and his black dalmation spots softly showing. He weighs about 45 lbs and is playful and friendly, just a very loving dog who should be with a family. He's terrific! Please call Leslie to meet him. He is in Hillsborough at 908-218-1939, or fill out an application below.

These pups seem like such sweeties, I hope someone from NJ sees this!

Star
Dog
Samoyed,Labrador Retriever Mix

Size: Large
Age: Adult
Sex: Female
I.D: Star

Notes:

Star is a 5-year old Samoyed-Lab mix who came to us from a shelter in Virginia. She is spayed, up to date on shots, and heartworm negative. Her right ear tilts off-kilter (in an endearing kind of way), due to a previous hematoma, but it's just part of what makes this girl so appealing!

Star is housetrained, crate trained, and non destructive. She walks well on a leash, knows basic obedience commands, and knows some beginner tricks like “shake” and “give me 5”. She is good with other dogs and good with cats. She is mellow and easy-going and based on her personality, her foster mom says she would make a good therapy dog…Mostly, she just wants attention and is not above pawing at you to make sure she gets it! :)

If you are interested in learning more about Star or in possibly adopting her, please visit our website where you can get more information and download our adoption application.

A lot of rescue groups don't like to say that their dogs are pit mixes because it scares people. I got in an argument recently with a fellow volunteer in my group because she wanted to not mention that a dog was part pit; I disagreed, because SOMEONE -- the vet or a friend or a neighbor -- is going to say, "Oh wow, you got a pitbull!" and then what if the person freaks out? If you're going to have a pit mix, you need to know that people might react weirdly and be able to deal with that.

I have been searching Petfinder to look for a friend for Freebee, and the reason that they have so many "labs" is that they classify a large number of the as "lab mixes"...any dog that even looks remotely like a lab is considered a lab mix, because people are more willing to adopt them. That one pup may have had a lab parent, but it was definitely red-nosed Pit nonethe less. I know they want these dogs to get homes, and they do
test them as much as possible at the shelters, but if someone adopts red-nose not knowing he is part Pit, and something bad happens, red-nose gets PTS....That's why I think that people should not adopt dogs without a small amount of testing. I had to fill out an application to even look at Theo, and then they wouldnt let me have him (I think because someone else wanted him) but the application is a good idea.

Chief
Dog
German Shepherd Dog,Golden Retriever Mix

Size: Large
Age: Young
Sex: Male
I.D:

Notes: Chief is a lovely dog, both in personality and looks. He is an easy going young boy who gets along and plays with male and female dogs. He's about 80 pounds. Came from a high kill pound and gave us "the look" wanting to get out of there. We ask that you fill out a pre-application which we will e-mail you. This helps us decide if the dog you are interested in would be a potential match and saves you driving a long way to see a dog that would never work in your environment. Of course, we are happy to answer specific questions you have before you fill out an application. The average fee that we pay the pound is $75. Our adoption fees begin at $150 and generally go to $300, depending upon the dog, BUT MOST FEES ARE IN THE LOW TO MIDDLE RANGE. This adoption donation includes the dog, spay or neuter surgery and most of the dog's shots, except for rabies shot which a vet must do. Dogs are usually dewormed on the adoption date and this is usually included too. This covers part of our costs to buy the dog from the pound, part of our costs to buy 120 pounds of dog food per day and part of our costs to run the kennel and keep the dogs alive (medical care, etc.) Basically, the small dogs support the kennel and rescue operation and the larger dogs that take longer and sometimes up to a year to get adopted here. If you choose to fill out the pre-application (which we will e-mail you upon your e-mail request), kindly fill it out in Word format and return via e-mail in an attachment. We have no fax machine here. We will review it and notify you if we think the dog you are interested in would be a good pet for you or your family. UNLESS THERE IS A REAL GOOD REASON, WE WILL ONLY PLACE A DOG WITH A HOME IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (OC/LB/LA/SF VLY/SOUTH BAY/SG VLY, ETC.)

Tex
Dog
Border Collie Mix

I agree with DL, I don't go to Petfinder because I end up crying cuz look at all these dogs! I wish everyone would just stop breeding dogs for a while, even the good breeders! Then everyone would have to go out and get all these wonderful strays!!
I remember, I had to BEG my mom to take me to the SPCA, I told her that I didn't care if we got a dog with papers that came from half - way across the world, I would 100% rather have a rescue. And guess what, I got my little Coaly Moley!! :D
