courtnek Posted June 7, 2003 Posted June 7, 2003 In the states there have been people who parade around in front of petstores handing out flyers and wearing A-signs ( a cardboard sign attached to front and back of your body via a hole for your head) that alerts people going in and out to the puppy mill problem. If you hand the flyers out without insisting, and let people read the sign, (MUCH better when there are pictures on the sign) it often changes peoples minds about buying from pet stores/puppymills. The down side is that if the owners ask you to leave, you have to. But you can still get the point across in the time you can stay out there. Also, if you are on the street, and not on the pet store property, they cant do anything to you. I dont know what your laws are like there, but it has worked here. good luck Quote
courtnek Posted June 7, 2003 Posted June 7, 2003 also, alert your version of the ASPCA to raid the place. They often find these dogs in terrible condition and can shut them down on that point. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 4, 2004 Posted June 4, 2004 I agree with what you guys are saying about pet stores, and how it is definately a better idea to adopt an animal from the Humane Society/Shelter... but at the same time, many petshops actually help out shelters by taking in some of the shelter's animals and selling or adopting them out... it all depends on the petshop you go to... so if you are ever wanting to purchase a puppy, always ask the manager where the animals come from, and encourage the store to introduce an adoption policy where they actually take in animals from local shelters. However, do not go to PETCO... they are currently being sued by PETA for animal cruelty and improper care...so yup..BOYCOTT PETCO! :o Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 4, 2004 Posted June 4, 2004 Sorry, but i for one WILL NEVER support PETA, for any reason. Shoot, Ill go to Petco just cause PETA is sueing them.... (why support a group that supports terrorism?) I havent ever purchased a pup from a pet store but in my hometown a new one came in so I decided to check it out. Well, all the pups claws were clipped so short they were all bloody. You could see mites on the snakes and fleas, not only on the pups and kittens, but on the rodents. The fish were covered in fungus and the water was just nasty. Needless to say myself and some others forced them to close their doors. the town does have a pet store that has been there for years and is very well kept. They rarely sell dogs and cats but do have an adoption program with one of the foundations. Quote
drjeffrock Posted June 4, 2004 Posted June 4, 2004 Welcome to the forum pitbulletta! My local pet store hosts shelter and rescue adoptions every weekend. Needless to say, they dont sell dogs. One pet store in my local mall does sell dogs and it is heart-breaking every time I walk by. Christine and I walked by a couple months ago and saw... an Akita puppy. Poor dog had just gotten in that day from Maryland and was so scared. Poor girl was shaking like crazy. We played with her for a few minutes, I started grilling the "salesperson" with questions. The person did not know their butt from a hole in the ground, and was only interested in making a sale, as they got a commission. The price of the Akita you ask? $1500 :eek3: A lot of people think that we are just preaching about not buying from puppymill breeders, but its with good cause. My neighbor bought two dogs from that pet store. A pomeranian who suffers from a luxating patella and also slight elbow dysplasia. His other dog, a rat terrier, died of some disease, but I cant remember which one for the life of me. And with regards to PETA, they prefer lining their coffers with money to be used in their legal defense and to support organizations (including terrorists) instead of spending it on on the animals that really need it. Dont forget, if PETA had their way, every single one of us would not be allowed to have a dog as a pet. Heck, in their eyes dogs helping disabled people should not be allowed. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 4, 2004 Posted June 4, 2004 I can't stand to go by the petstores anymore. I got kicked out and Banned from one in the mall for voicing my opionon.. Quote
courtnek Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 I too, will never take sides with PETA...The PetCo here, at least, does not sell dogs or cats, does sell reptiles and fish, occasionally ferretts, and brings birds in to be looked at for adoption. They used to sell rabbits. ALL of the cages for these critters are clean, there is food and water, and the cages are meant to mirror their home living conditions. With heat lamps, blacklights, misting, etc. Maybe this is an exceptinal Petco, I dont know. But I'll tell you a horror story about PETA. They went to a convention where seafood was going to be served, and they BOUGHT all the lobsters from the vendors. They then releaed these lobsters back into the Pacific Ocean, WITHOUT REMOVING THE RUBBER BANDS USED TO CONTAIN THEIR CLAWS!!! They ALL drowned, and started washing back on shore the next week. They bought these lobsters with "donated"money, from their sponsors and idiots who trust them. THEY ALL DIED....anyway. I dont think PETA knows anything at ALL about animals, except what they want people to believe. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I put these people in the same league as Sue Sternberg. In it for the power and the glory, nothing else.  Quote
izzy Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 Oh you should come here and watch the mexican pet stores full of puppies, kittens, birds, and exotic animals, here where i live is so famous a pet store 'cause they have an alligator in there, is not for sale, but you can go there and watch it, they keep him in a small place, it sucks  A few weeks ago we where at the mall and they have 3 old english sheperd puppies and two staffies, everyone look at you with that killing eyes when you express what you feel seeing those poor dogs in the cages, and as you know, those puppies are compulsively sold and later they could be in the street.   Quote

And man do thoes trips to the vet cost allot!"..oh well guess I'll never be invited to that pet store again! Hey Shara making Flyers is actually a great idea! If you need any help just PM me. Quote

Guest Anonymous Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 I still can't agree with the options you guys have about PETA... there are alot of good things that the organization has done for animals...I was just at one of their demonstrations last week and it was quite successful... Not to mention they do a great job at educating the public on various issues..because of them, I found out about puppy mills, IAMS, circuses, etc..before that you can say I had no clue. Quote

While I kinda agree with you I think that PETA is WAY too extream. I'd say that there are decent PETA people who genuinly try to educate without harassing people. Then there are the crazy PETA people who hand out thoes horrible flyers to school kids, and who let lobsters "free" with the rubber bands still on there claws  . If PETA would tone it down maybe they could gain more respect. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 Yup... if you yell and scream at people, it will only alienate them and they won't listen. If you let them know what the problem is and what they can do to help, they're much more willing to lend a helping hand... Quote
Lucky Chaos Posted June 11, 2004 Posted June 11, 2004 Dog Lover napisaĆ(a):Plus Ingrid from the PETA was all for the banning of pit bulls. :x I'll try and find the letter she wrote. It was soooo full of crap! Animal welfare my arse! Anybody else remember that? PETA wants to make it so people can't own ANY dogs of ANY breed. It's "cruel" remember? Quote
courtnek Posted June 11, 2004 Posted June 11, 2004 PETA started out with a valid charter, and really did try to help get animal cruelty under control. (Can you tell I'm old?   ) I used to admire their work...until they started getting fanatical. Posting signs in colleges telling people to drink beer, not milk...."freeing" all those lobsters so they could subsequently drown in agony....They have an ad that says something to the affect that "you mom is a killer", showing a mom with a butcher's knife slicing up an animal....I also remember hearing about them "busting" a puppy mill, and then LETTING ALL THE BEAGLES GO!!! because "they belong in the wild, free....."BEAGLES of all things!!! How the hell would anyone expect a beagle to survive in the wild? Freebee hunts and catches squirrels and she couldnt do it. At least she's tall enough to knock over a garbage can if she had to, to eat. They have become EXTREMISTS to the extreme. They dont want anyone to own pets. we need to let them all be "free", so they can starve, get hit by cars, and freeze....     Quote

mydogroxy Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 I still can't agree with the options you guys have about PETA as a pit bull owner, you should be against peta on principle alone. no one who owns a bully should support an organization that supports the destruction of the breed. Quote
gooeydog Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Wasn't meaning it as you having screwed up, just wanted to be sure that there weren't any arguments about how PETA's BS was all in the past   Quote
Cairn6 Posted June 14, 2004 Posted June 14, 2004 I am horrified by that flyer they were passing out to children. What about the rights of children not to traumatized. That is way beyond sick!! Quote
