Rowie-the-Pooh Posted May 22, 2003 Posted May 22, 2003 :o Rowie is covered, and I mean covered in ticks! :o Let me begin from the begining..(get ready for an essay! ) Way back in Febuary, my grandfather had a stroke. He fell down and nearly broke his leg. He was rushed to the hospital, and then placed in the "Special Needs" section(or something like that). My mother was devestated, altough her father was never around for her much, was a drunk, and well, not a great father, she still cared for him. She was there 24/7. He lost most of his memory, he needed several operations, and his legs where paralyesed.(I think, but now thier OK)... Now you might be thinking " what the h*ll does this hasto do with ticks? :o" let me finish  So my grandpa was sent away to h*ll knows where, to have yet another operation on his leg, and to have special care. After a month, he returned to us. Now, he lives with us, he's staying for a month, and then he's going to live at my uncles house(we're waiting for him to build an extra room in the house). Meanwhile, Rowie has been an outside dog! (Shock eh? :o) The reason is, my mother is too scared that she might hurt him by mistake. Although Rowie is as gentle as a lamb when it comes to Children and Elders. My mother doesn't want to risk it. My grandfather is as weak as a new born deer, ANYTHING, and I mean ANYTHING, and it's back to the hospital, or even... :o I'v begged my mother, again, and again...but she said NO every single time. I'm devestated, Rowie thinks we're punishing her! She sits just infront of the door, begging us with her eyes to let her in. Saying sorry for whatever she did wrong! I god, I'm crying now.. Now for the other explanation.. I don't actually live in the UK  I am from the UK, my whole family is, but currently I live in Bahrain. Bahrain is an Arabic country that is (I think) 25 Kilometers from Saudi. Its a REALLY tiny island, I don't know if any of you know of it, but it's great! My fathers work brought us here, it takes us all around the world! :o I lived in the US for 2 years, then back to the UK, then to Bahrain. It seems like we're gonna stay here for some time...(Oh, and my uncle lives here too and my grandparents! :D So I don't feel to home sick or anything) SOOOO, what does all this hafto do with ticks? (I'm the wierdest girl on this forum aren't I? ) In Bahrain, the temprature goes up to 55 Celcius sometimes. Mostly its in the 30's or 40's. :o Now, its summer, and the heat is unbearable. My grandfather chose the best time to come live with us :-? Now Rowie's outide in the heat. And there is nothing I can do! To make it worse, Rowie is COVERED in ticks! :o :o They are on her muzzle, her tummy, and between her toes. Bahrain has a tick problem, but there is no danger of lyme disease or anything. I already bought Rowie a supposeldy "Tick and Flea Collar", but its not working! I don't have anything else. Here's the worst part, Bahrain has absaloutly NO dog products! Sure, we have the basics, like leads, collars, and dog food, but there are no Halters, Bitter Apple, not even a DOG BED! :o Crates, and some other stuff are REALLY rare! Its always a bother, I try to get Rowie stuff, But I can't. Taking care of a dog in Bahrain is tough! :bigcry: Now PLEASE don't bash me or anything. I'm sure your thinking "Why did she get a dog?" Well, cuz, like the rest of you, I cannot live without a dog. And Rowie loves it here!(I got her from here) She has no problems, the biggest problem for her is where she hid her chew toy! All this stress! All the pressure is building up! :o :x  I feel like a failed my Rowie.... So, what should I do? Rowie's ouside, in the heat, covered in ticks! I don't care anymore, I'm ordering from the internet! What should I get her? What should I do?? :o Am I a bad owner or what? Quote
StarFox Posted May 22, 2003 Posted May 22, 2003 NO way are you a bad owner!! NO way! You love Rowie....we all know that! It's not your fault..things like this just happen...it;s not your fault that your grandfather got sick or anything. So don't blaim youself...your a great owner! :P :D Hmm I dunno much about ticks....I know Zebra has a collar that keeps ticks off it;s called -Preventik, or Pteventic. Umm and there is Frontline that keeps ticks and fleas off dogs. *shrugs* other then thoes two i dunno. I'm sure there are other medications out there that can help with the ticks. Maybe there is something you can put in the yard, like a spray to keep the ticks off the lawn. Oh and make sure your lawn is cut real short...I think the less grass/bushes the less ticks. Hope this helped you some. And try not to be so hard on yourself, your doing the best you can in the given situation. Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted May 22, 2003 Author Posted May 22, 2003 Ohh Thank You Star! :D You sure are a star! Your post made me feel so much better! I'm on the internet now searching for some stuff...I told my mther about keeping the grass short(Although it already is!) but we're gonna cut it abit shorter just in case! :D Thanks So much Star! I feel so much better! Quote
Mille Posted May 22, 2003 Posted May 22, 2003 If you can't buy Frontline etc, you might want to try to give Rowie some garlic. We have lots of ticks here too, and I've started to give my dogs a couple of garlic cloves each day. It really helps..... (they get quite an interesting breath, too..... :o ) I don't know if it'll work when there's so many of them, but maybe it's worth a try? I really HATE  those little creatures, I have to take a shower and inspect every part of my body after each time I've been out in the forest. The thought of them crawling and biting me..... I'd probably go insane in Bahrain  Good luck! Mille Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted May 22, 2003 Posted May 22, 2003 Rowie, don't be so hard on yourself. From what I've seen and read you are a GREAT dog owner. I mean look, you couldn't know that this was going to happen. And now that it has you're doing everything in your power to help her and "make it all better" My dogs have Advantage for fleas and ticks. I also know of one called interceptor. Sorry I can't be of more help. Quote
Rosebud Posted May 22, 2003 Posted May 22, 2003 :D Order the biggest bottle of this you can find and spray your yard and dog with it. It's really safe and will kill ticks, fleas and a ton of other stuff. ADAMS FLEA & TICK SPRAY. Here's a link to a place that has some along with lots of other great stuff to order online. http://preview.jbpet.com/Shopping/default.asp Wow, I just checked it out and they have a concentrate for use on the yard only, will have to order some of that. Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted May 22, 2003 Posted May 22, 2003 IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT THINGS HAVE HAPPENED THIS WAY I WAS GOING TO SUGEST FRONTLINE WHERE IN THE UK WHERE YOU FROM? YOU NEVER TOLD ME BEFORE YOU WERE ENGLISH :D MAKE SURE ROWIE HAS PLENTY OF WATER IS THERE SOME SORT OF SHADE TO GET ROWIE OUT OF THE SUN Quote
StarFox Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 Glad I could help Rowie... :) Keep me updated on how it goes with all thoes nasty ticks. :P Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted May 23, 2003 Author Posted May 23, 2003 Thank You all so much! :D You have all been so supportive, I knew I could come to Dogomania for help! Rowie's been getting worse. She's started jumping in the pool(only the steps). She has plenty of shade(Our garden is our own little forest :o ) and we change her water every 2 hours, to make sure its clean, cold, and there is no drool in it! :o Also, we started adding some warm water to her kibble, cuz it dry, and might get her too thirsty. I also bought a little tub kinda thing, and placed some cold, cold water in it. Rowie loves just laying there and doing nothing! We change that 2 times a day. I'm also giving her a kinda run down with water more frequently. And the sprinklers are on every day at 6 in the evening, she enjoys that! :D But the ticks! :x Da*n those little buggers! It's getting really bad, thanks Rosebud for the website! I'm going to order it and spray some in the yard! It sounds really good. :D The problem is it will take some time for it to get here :-? I'm going to the vets later today, and get some more "Anti-Tick" stuff :-? There's a really good place down in Manama(the capital city of Bahrain) that I haven't checked out yet. I'm doing all I can for my Rowie Pooh, I'm just really scared she might be so covered in ticks that there might be nothing to do! :o Like it might be too late or something.. [b]THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT! LOVE Y'ALL! Quote
Malamum Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 Wow Bahrain sounds interesting. I don't know why but I just assumed you were from the US. NO!! you are not a bad owner at all. Rowie sounds like she is VERY loved. In regards to the ticks I would just order as much stuff as I could on-line and buy a fair bit in one go so you don't have to pay too much in shipping costs. Rosebud Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003  Rowie, The adams spray can be used as a preventative as well as to kill existing ticks. Whenever Sally gets a tick I spray that on just the tick wait about 15-20 minutes and the tick is dead and easy to remove. We used it to keep horse-flys off of the horses. Just spray the dog down with it and the ticks will stay away from her. The only problem with it is that it is water-soluable so it looses some of it's power after a dip in the pool or a rain. Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 there is no drool in it! but the water tastes better with floaties in Quote
Bubblezzz Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 Whoa, good luck Rowie-the-pooch. :o I use Frontline for my babies and it's pretty good. Don't be too hard on yourself, your baby sounds so loved! :iloveyou: Off topic here, but I when I was away studying, I had a b**tard of a landlord who had a (should have been) beautiful mutt. The ONLY care he took of it was to plonk down a plate of kibble when he got home (sometimes very late) at night. The dog was allowed to roam the streets (urban neighbourhood) and was hosed dowm with water (what he considered bathing) only twice the one year I was there.    Poor Patches lived with ticks on him I assume, his whole life. They were the mega huge kind, like grapes, and sometimes lined up on his ears like they were apartment dwellers. The one time I got the courage to speak up (landlord although initially nice, turned out to be a monster), I got a huge 'mind your own business' snap. :( We never saw the condition of the dog until after we paid our deposit, or we would NEVER have rented from that b**tard. Looking back, I was an idiot not to have reported him. :( Patches always came home though and was still happy to greet her owner. :( :( :( Quote
abker17 Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 U are not a bad owner rowie! Shouldn't the vet be able to remove the ticks that are on her now? Letting them stay on will start to make her weak. :( See if the vet can take them off. Best of luck! I'll keep U and your pooch in my prayers. :) Quote
Peng1zrule Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 go online and request some catalogs, pet edge is a GREAT one, but care alot pets and some others are good too. Use frontline, and amatraz tick collars. Try treating your yard, too. I can think of www.jbpet.com off the top of my head, www.allpets.com too. they'll send you a catalog. In the meantime, get some lemon dish soap and see if that'll take care of ticks, and (yes, I am advising deceit) start sneaking Rowie in late at night and putting her out early in the morning. After awhile, come clean--that the dog has been in your room, and your room only, for some time and there have been NO problems. My dogs, because I still live at home, are confined to my bedroom almost all the time. I don't mind it, and they're very happy that they are protected from the elements. I also did obediance work with them and carefully planned the time to debut my well trained dogs. I'm still amazed it worked, lol. Quote
Angelboddy Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 They say putting alittle of any kind of cooking oil on the spin on the back helps prevent having as much ticks and fleas. My friend tried this cause she was a little low on money and it worked wonders for her dog. Hope this helps. And good luck to you and your pup. Quote
