My oldest daughter and I were coming back from Walmart one afternoon and happened upon a little chihuahua mix on the side of a back country road. She seemed about half wild and we thought she was a stray, so we tried to catch her. I have to admit I have always liked chihuahua dogs.

It's really rare to see a dog like this running loose. Chihuahuas are usually lap dogs, or house dogs, and she did look a little rough and dirty, and went for a cold stale french fry like it was a porterhouse steak.

Turns out she had a home, and the reason she was acting half wild is because she knew we were trying to take her away from it. Dogs will do that.

Anyhow, she ran up the the nearest house and we decided to report to the owner that she was hanging around near the road, and that unscrupulous people (like us) might try to steal her, or she might get run over.

She was real nice about it and agreed she should probably pen her up, that she did private rehabilitation on strays and abuse cases. I told her about my affinity for chihuahuas. She mentioned that she had a male Chihuahua with a bad background. He was shy and nervous and wouldn

He was a sweetie. He broke my heart the way he would hang just out of reach while we petted the other dogs, his heart in his eyes. He wanted to be petted so badly you could feel it but he just couldn'd get past his mistrust of humans. We didn't push him. We had to handle him when he was being wormed, etc, but that was it and we were always very gentle and petted him gently. The minute we put him down he shook off the contact and went and hid in the corner. Some people need to be beaten. Thoroughly.

....I am still chihuahua-less. My husband has a problem with animals in the house and a chihuahua needs to be indoors to enjoy them. He allowed Cujo in for treatment which was a major step and has since allowed a broken-legged cat in under the same conditions, however the cat left us with a nasty case of fleas and that has not helped my cause.

In time, maybe once the kids are gone I will be able to work my wiles on him. My fantasy birthday/christmas/anniversary gift is a teacup chihuahua and he knows it. Fingers crossed in Fla.

I agree wholeheartedly - and THANK YOU for doing what you could for the
little guy - I am sure he is on the bridge, remembering that at least SOMEONE cared about him......

:D
