I was skimming through the local paper this morning when something evil, very evil, caught my eye...

KING CALLS FOR BAN ON DAGEROUS DOGS
Armidale Dumaresq Councillor Sue King has called for stronger action against dangerous dogs and their owners. Cr King has asked senior officers to investigate whether council can ban certain breeds of dogs deemed dangerous. "I would like to see Armidale have a ban on what could be called dangerous dogs", she said.
"We have a number of dogs that are entirely unsuitable to be kept in the town environs. Most of them are shut up in small backyards.
"Rottweilers and the like are capable of killing children and little old ladies, like me, and I object to having them in town," Cr King said.

ARGH!!!!! THIS MAKES ME SO ANGRY!!!!
Ok, I know the best way to go about it would be to start a petition or something, but I really don't think I'd have to time to organise all that... I've been rather busey lately.
So what I was thinking is I could write a letter to the newspaper.... I did it a few years ago about the local dog park, next thing I was on the front page of the paper, on abc national radio and even in an australia/new zealand wide magazing on the first page!!! Oh, and of course, the dog park has been fixed!
So I'm just asking you guys if you have a few good arguements I could throw in, I'm really furious about this stupid excuse of a woman that decides she doesn't like the dogs so take away good peoples rights to own them. Next thin I'll be having to leave town because she'll decide she doesn't like Boxers!!!!
And whats this crap about "what could be called dangerous dogs", does she even know a Pomeranian is capable of killing a child??? Any dog could be called a dangerous dog, I think she should be talking about dangerous owners!!! Wouldn't time be better spent educating them? And the breeders to breed dogs with better temprements? She says they are unsuitable for the towns environs, what is that supposed to mean? If owners walked their dogs they would be fine, reguardless of the breed, its not the dogs fault if stupid owners keep them locked up all day! :x
Help me fight this evil, evil woman to the death!!!! :agrue:

Maybe if you got some stats that would help? ie. if the stats showed what breeds of dog injured or killed people, it would probably help eradicate some of those myths about Rotts et al being "dangerous". Don't know who would have those- RSPCA, Aust Veterinary Assoc, ummm who else?? That might help your argument a little- otherwise you know there are many many posts on here arguing artfully against BSL.

Aroura, this BSL is creeping in all over Aussie. Queensland councils have gone crazy with their 'banned', 'prohibited' and 'restricted' breeds. It's happening in other States as well. My Council have named 4 breeds which
must be notified to them if you own or have them on your property. There are other Councils in Melbourne area which have banned some breeds already. Have a search around on your computer for" Breed Specific Legislation" and you will find it's going on all over the world. So many breeds being targetted and so much heartache for owners. There are many sites where you can get info. on how to reply/fight this awful vendetta.

Banning dogs is so very unfair! I wish they could ban bad owners, or have everyone wanting to get a dog have to take a test to make sure they could, or something.

Spot on !

I'm ALL FOR the testing theory, and have said that for years. All of the shelters in this state are required to "match" the dog to the potential owner, making sure they have the time, space, and education to raise the dog and care for it properly. Most even require you bring your other pets and family members with to meet the dog, so there is less chance of
a problem. And if the shelter doesnt think it's a good match, they wont adopt the dog out.

Unfortunately, breeders are not required to do that. Nor are pet stores.
A good breeder will, but there are a lot of unscrupulous ones out there as well.

Gather up all the information you can on dog bites/attacks in your area, and the kind of dogs that were involved, and make up a spreadsheet. Then send it to the newspapers. ANY dog can and will bite if given the proper provocation....

A bit of a 'Catch 22' situation here! Compile a list of the breeds which have bitten/attacked and then, rather than lift any bans in place, there will be the inclination to ban any breed mentioned. The logic of banning an entire breed is non-existant and what about the cross-breeds ie: Corgi/Fox terrier say, do both breeds get banned? Who decides what the mix is? Some of the so-called experts cant identify a pure breed! It's a ridiculous situation and I cant see any solution as the education of people doesn't appear to be on the agenda, just let's eliminate the dogs

Thanks for the ideas everyone.... I wish they could just make a law that you need a licence to breed, if only it were that easy and there were only good breeders out there who sold their pups to only good homes!!!! When I got Lily I got lucky, she already had an offer on her, this guy in Tamworth had his heart set on her and was even willing to pay alot extra for her, but the breeder knocked him back as he had a full time job and wouldn't have the spare time that a boxer needs each day, so she sold Lily to me :D
If only all breeders were more like her!!!! The world would be such a happier place with all doggies happy and safe in a home that loves them and has the time and patience a dog needs, but instead there are these unscrupulous owners who neglect their doggie and so the doggies not happy and bites someone and gets put down, then all the other dogs with the good owners have to sacrafice their beloved pets just because of these other stupid owners who ruin it for everyone!!!!!
I'll have to do my research on this one, it might have to wait until the end of the week seeing as I have an important psych essay to write, but at the end of the week, look out Sue King, you've got one hell of an angry Jeanne to face!!! :agrue:
