ShadyLady Posted May 5, 2003 Posted May 5, 2003 Just out of interest . I though I'd train my sheep dog to do some tricks (he's way too smart) so I taught him to drop , lay down then roll over I did this in individual steps . But now when I tell him to drop he does it automatically . Its a little embarrasing when you trying to herd sheep and your dogs doing sumersoults on the ground  I taught him with praise . So now when I tell him to drop its drop and then stop!! Quite a mouthful anyone got any ideas?? Quote

Some folks use platz...I think German for down. It really doesn't matter what word you use. Right now your dog has connected a whole chain of behaviors to the command 'drop". While you could work through retraining this it would be easier on you and less confusing to the dog if you just pick a new word for "drop". Quote
JackieMaya Posted May 22, 2003 Posted May 22, 2003 My last Golden Retriever, Cracker, loved to do tricks. I would hold up a treat, and he would go through his whole repertoire: sit, turn around, shake, lie down, roll over, etc. It was hysterical. But he wasn't a working dog, so I can see how it could be a problem with your dog! Good luck. Quote
