help on getting a dog

I need to know what type of breed is the best for me to get..both for me and my girlfriend. It's mainly for her, they live in an urban area with a considerable large fenced backyard. I'm looking for a smaller dog...that does not require much grooming (long hair to deal with). For me I would love one I could take walking with me, to the park to play, etc...and for her cuteness...and a dog that loves a lot! Please help me out here, thanks!

Well I am biased but I have a springer spaniel and we live in the city she gets 2 good walks a day but she could go all day !!!
They are great pets and only medium sized !
Very loyal and loving, they are the whole package !!!
Go on, get one ,go on !!!!! :Dog_run:

Beagles are very cute, my niece has one named Mr. Peabody. But they are SLAVES TO THEIR NOSES! Once they put their nose to the ground they will follow a scent trail to the bitter end. PLUS...they will bay like crazy when something excites them or frustrates them. I lived next door to a woman with two beagles who were kenneled constantly...After the second year of baying I KIND OF got used to it! :o

They are lovely dogs, but do have some special issues for the city dweller.

I would go to my local animal shelter and get a Dog which really needs a home. Most animal shelters are pretty good at matching an owner up with the right Dog or Puppy..if you get a full grown dog you don't have to go threw the evil puppy months... and you will know exactly the size your dog will be.

DEFINITELY visit the shelter. Beagles are small, cute and have short hair,
but they bay constantly and in a city environment they will annoy your neighbors. They also need LOTS of excercise, and they dig....

how small is small? like poundage? lab mixes will often have the short hair (they still shed though) but they can run 70 lbs or more...maybe a Jack Russell Terrier mix would work, but they tend to be diggers too....

Go see the dogs (and the people) at the shelter. They should be able to match you up with the right dog, and you will be saving a life that desperatley needs saving!

Good luck to you!
