To my guys' first exam at their new vet (recommended by a co-worker). I have to say I was impressed by his intereactions with them and the manner in which he spoke with my husband and myself. "If he were my dog"...was the lead statement when I asked about pain medication for our rottie. Max cannot tolerate buffered aspirin. He ran through a number of options of over the counter meds, mentioned prescription meds, but said again that he would not want to have a dog of his on these long-term, heavy side-effect drugs if there was any other option available. He and his vet tech spent a good deal of time with our dogs and us, asking questions and getting a good feel for the health of Ben and Max, as well as performing the physical exam.

Ben weighs 149 pounds and Max now weighs 109 pounds. Both are healthy and heartworm free. Max does suffer from an old injury to his right rear knee and a birth defect of his left front foot which has caused his shoulder to become arthritic.

As for the heartworm issue...he asked what we had been using (Heartguard chewables) and said that he would recommend that the guys continue with this. Plus, and this is something new for us, he performed the fecal test himself while we waited. At our other vets we always found out the results a day or so later!

I'm sorry...I know I am running on about this, but I am so pleased that I think we have found a doggie doctor who has a lot of knowledge coupled with common sense plus an easy "dogside manner"! :D

The only downer of the entire visit was paying for all this service plus the cost of 8 months of Heartguard! Ch-ching!

Yes it is! Our previous vet always seemed a bit nervous and was always talking about how he really wanted to be an archaeologist! His wife was also a vet and she was always on the verge of a lecture! Hmmm...they were good vets, just not a good fit for us.

Oh my .... I'm sorry but I can't stop laughing!! What a way to really impress your clients...talk about the job you wish you had!

Glad you found a good vet. I wish more pet owners would demand higher quality service from vets!! Mine is great too. I've never even heard of waiting days for a fecal - it takes like 2 minutes to run! I drop off samples in the am regularly and they call me later if they find anything.

I'm glad to hear you found a wondreful vet, who not only has your pets concern at hand, but also your trust. Being a vet tech, I can tell you it's crucial to the client/patient/vet bond. When people are satisfied, it's good for everyone involved. Sometimes you will see people get upset with their vet, and apply the stereotype that all vets are that way. In return, they just stop taking their pet to the doctor in general. Not even bothering to look for a new one.
I work at a small animal practice. My boss is the only vet. From experiences with others, and wokring at other animal hospitals, I think his technique is among the best. He interacts with the clients and patients on many levels. It's not strictly exam the pet.......it's examine the pet and also play with them to get them used to him, or whatever. He wilingly stays with the client until they feel they understand the answers they were seeking. He doesn't rush them out, he makes sure they get the answers etc. We have surveys that we started handing out to clients, and overall an overwhelming majority have given an incredible amount of positive comments. I know there are vets out there who seem to strictly be in it for the money. Get in, examine the pet, get out asap. No interaction wiht either, just the basic or possible minimum. We aren't all like that, trust me.
With that said, congrats again with finding a new vet who better suits you and your boys needs!

Behle, Glad you have found a vet that you are so happy with. It really makes a big difference.

I have to say that I am quite happy with the vet we have chosen. A few months ago Indy was starting to develop a hot spot, so booked him in at the vets and made it their last appointment for the night (6.45) so I had time to get home from work. Indy was very good while she shaved the area but when it came to cleaning, it was causing him a fair bit of pain so she decided she wanted to sedate him. To cut a long story short we were there till about 9.30/10.00 on a Friday night and they were great. The bill was also only $125.00 she didn't charge me any consulting time - only for the sedation and the medication she gave us. I was very impressed.

I'm so glad to hear that you found a wonderful vet ;) The vet we used for Maggie was wonderful - you could tell that he really cared about her and genuinely liked her. Wasn't afraid to spend the entire time he spent talking with us down on the floor cuddling with her. One of the things that meant the most to me was that before he put her to sleep, he sent my mother home to give me a call and tell me what was going on: showed that he really understood how much I loved her and cared about my feelings.

And, by the way, speaking of Pennsylvania, I'm located in Erie with close ties to both Pittsburgh and the Titusville (if you're familiar with that area, I'm so, so sorry ;) area.

Wow, sure is huh? My partner and I take one of my dogs to Valley Forge park every weekend for a few hours. I adore it there, and it's been a wonderful anhancement to socialization.

Aww well I only make it a point to notice the places that are dog friendly, but yes, you're correct. I remember I was walking my one dog in a park, and the ranger came out running towards me. Yelled at me for allowing my dog to walk on the damn grass, and then told me I was not allowed to be anywhere but in the woods or creek with a dog. I left, being that I was about 10 years old, and didn't have enough courage at the time to talk back or speak my mind. I was so angry, it was unreal. Kind of funny too..... you practically had to walk through a stretch of grass to get to the woods that lined the creek
It wasn't even the fact that my dog wen tto the bathroom. She never went.
People are idiots. People vandalize public parks all the time, yet I can't innocently walk my dog, or God forbid allow them to touch a blade of grass :agrue:
