Ickle Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 THE CAST OFF What is the worth of a dog you say. Take it in and house it for a shortened stay. Love and cherish and feed it well, Then toss it away to the depths of hell. Let it wander and roam the city streets, Finding food where it will in the rain and sleet, Sleeping under the steps in an alley bare, Cold and forlorn, not a soul to care. Long tangled coat that was once so neat, Matted with burrs and grime from the street. Once fluffy white ruff and bib of snow, Now wet and begrimed from the gutters flow. Paws that are raw from the splintered ice, Eyes that once danced with an impish delight Are now clouded and dull with an air of despair, A faithful heart aches for someone to care. But never once in his destitute flight, Doe's he blame we humans for his desperate plight. In his heart of hearts he still hopes to find A master to love him and he'll pay in kind. No grudges he holds, nor scorn will he heap On the ones who tossed him onto the street. All he asks is a hearth by a fire bright, To keep at bay the chills of a cold winter's night. As he nestles his chin on mud spattered feet, And dreams of green pastures and frolicking sheep, His heart slowly stops beating, earthly cares are all done, The trip to dog heaven has already begun. behle Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 So sad. There are so many cast-offs out there. Quote

jen Posted April 20, 2003 Posted April 20, 2003 :bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry: the thought of all those dogs out there that have been cast away like this fills my eyes with tears and breaks my heart  :lilangel: Quote
courtnek Posted April 20, 2003 Posted April 20, 2003 I am beginning to believe that all dogs should be chipped, and if one is found in that condition the owners better have a DAMN GOOD REASON for why it was like that...... I can see a dog escaping, getting lost and maybe the owners couldnt find it, but they better be able to prove they tried REAL HARD..... It makes me so angry..... I lost mine to disease, and some people just throw them away like they're trash..... Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted April 20, 2003 Posted April 20, 2003 even then they have excuses - :( - yes it was my dog but I sold it/gave it away a year or so ago     :( Quote
jen Posted April 20, 2003 Posted April 20, 2003 i like your idea about "chipping" Courtnek, at least we`d be able to track the scum that dump`s their dog. I too have lost two of my dogs, 1 fought a brain tumour very bravley until he went to "the bridge" he was called Ben, and my second was my rotty called "bronwin" who "fell asleep" in her bed at the age of 14 and went to meet Ben at "the bridge". When i think of those people who just throw their dogs away like yesterdays garbage, makes me sick to my stomach and soooooooooo angry!!! But like mouseatthebusstop said even if the dogs were chipped the scumbags would still make up an excuse like "i sold that dog ages ago", or some lie like that!! Quote
courtnek Posted April 21, 2003 Posted April 21, 2003 Then if they sell/give away the dog they have to alert the vet, or the police, or a database somewhere with the new owners name and address. It could be done, if anyone was willing to invest the time and money into getting the laws changed. There is still too much of a "they're only animals" attitude out there... I also think that if they knew they would get caught for dumping, they'd be less likely to do so. Quote
jen Posted April 21, 2003 Posted April 21, 2003 i completley agree with you on this one, it`s a brilliant idea and it would be excellent for the government to fund this idea and also change the laws so that they did get punished if they dumped their pet, but it`s true there is so much of "their only animals" syndrome around that they wont bother to do it  It`s so frustrating and such a shame :( , as i think doing this is one of the only ways that could work to stamp this evil crime out   Quote
