Don'tcha hate that !!??

At Christmas time , all 3 of my girls had the prettiest poop in town !!
If the kids leave any kind of little plastic toy out , guaranteed it will end up in the digestive system of one of my 3 !!
I have a Rott/Lab, and 2 Jacks .... sometimes the Jacks are worse...!! :o

My Rott/Lab, Gretchen , has this weird behavior, whenever someone comes to the house , after she greets them, she will go and steal a washcloth out of a clothes basket (clean, hasn't been folded yet) or if no baskets, she will go in the bathroom and raid the bathroom garbage for something !! Lately that has been dixie cups !! :confused1: When I tell her to drop it she will , but how weird.... if I don't catch her she eats it up, not the washcloth, the dixie cup !!

I would guess that's a jealousy thing - PAY ATTENTION TO ME!! instead of paying attention to her - and having lab in her, eating is the way to get your attention, and the vets attention, and surgery..

THEY EAT EVERYTHING!!!

I have yet to figure out what it is that makes them do that......when I do (if I do) I'll let ya know.

Malamum - A dixie cup is a little paper/wax-coated disposable drinking cup that many people use in their bathrooms instead of a normal drinking glass. Use it once, toss it in the trash! Although I have no idea why Gretchen (Debbie's furkid) would want to eat one! :eating: I'd love to hear her explanation!

Sounds to me like your dog has "Pica" (depraved appetite) which is an obsessive compulsive behavior where a dog regularly eats objects not considered part of the normal diet.
"Pica" is not an abnormality of the digestive system or nurtritional problem, but a psychological abnormality & is more habit then a Medical problem.
Providing alternative edible objects such as a Femur bone, Kong - stuffed with cream cheese, peanut butter or treats some times help....

Thanks for the info Casi, but this is actually a lab thing.....

They are compulsive eaters, chewers, escapists and thieves.....

this particular plastic bad had had cheese in it, and I threw it out in the trash can under my desk, instead of in the kitchen which he cant get to.
All I had to do was turn around and he had sniffed it out and swallowed it.
I wasnt thinking, and so I actually kinda caused the problem....

I think it's a retriever thing in general, since my purebred golden and my
other lab mix all did it....

Courtnek, to kick you while you're down, I hope you don't have to do what I did when one of my dogs ate a plastic bag. He was trying to pass it and it came part way through. I had to reach down there and ummm pull it the rest of the way out. Ew ew ew!!

My Lab is about the best dog I have for NOT chewing up things he ought not. The above incident was with one of my Lhasas.

Have a nice day and good luck.

No, I have never had a Lab....but I do work at a Vet clinic and we see this quite often...
One Gentleman had to have surgery done 3 times to his Lab to get rocks out as they had blocked him...this gentleman found that the only time the dog injested rocks is when he got excited when out on walks and meeting up with some one new...so what worked for this gentleman was keeping the lead on the dog until the excitment wore off., that way he was able to keep him away from rocks...another lady had to bring her mixed breed in twice for observation after it had injested her panties...we kept the dog until it had passed them.
There is no real cure for "Pica", in some difficult cases a wire basket muzzle may be used on the dog. The muzzle allows the dog to pant, sniff & even drink, but not eat. Of course never use a muzzle on an unattended animal....some human medications can also be used to treat this obsessive compulsive disorder.

Your post reminded me of an incident with my Golden Retriever. He used to eat rocks, literally....He would chew them up and swallow them...

I was very concerned because he was grinding down his teeth and I was afraid of colon issues, but he passed the rocks every time. I asked the vet about it, and they did a bloodwork on him. Turns out he had a mineral deficiency!! All I can think is that he was eating the rocks to get the necessary minerals!!!

They put him on a vitamin supplement, and he never ate another rock!!

Weird, isnt it? I cant, however, think of what kind of deficiency (diet wise)
would cause a dog to eat plastic or panties.......LOL
