Luka-pop Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 Okay, during the hour that he was left alone, Luka went over to the kitchen counter and some how got to the pork, covered in tin foil! There were four very large pieces and to make it worse, it was all covered in BBQ sauce! And it was boned! He did pass bowel movement, but he had about two bowls of water, and his stomach is very enlarged and he is lethargic. What should I do? Will it pass naturally, or is it something that I should call the vet about? And how long should I not give him food for? I'm really worried cause it was four large pieces, with bones, and in salty BBQ sauce! And BTW, there are no traces of bones anywhere! Please help!!! Quote
behle Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 Hi Luka - If it were my dog, I would call the vet to get their advice. Better safe than sorry. Perhaps someone with more emergency experience will post here soon too. I would call the vet. Quote
Daisysmom Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 Did he eat the foil too? The BBQ sauce is full of sugar, other than that, it shouldn't be a problem. Dogs can eat raw meat, as we all know, but pork isn't on the list  Here is quote from Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats by Diane Stein "Avoid using pork because it contains the highest amounts of chemical additives and its fat raises pets' cholesterol levels" From this, it doesn't sound like it would be a big problem this one time. (Except for the foil????) Quote
Rosebud Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 :o First I would put gentle pressure on his abdomen, if it is at all tender, GET TO VET IMMEDIATELY! He should probably go to the vet regardless, he shouldn't be lethargic just because he had a BIG dinner. The bowel movement was probably what he had earlier and not the pork. I don't think I would take any chances with the bones, since he ate 4 PORK bones. I hope it's not as serious as it sounds. Quote
Luka-pop Posted April 11, 2003 Author Posted April 11, 2003 Thanks guys. No, Luka didn't eat the foil. He skillfully uncovered the dish and grabbed it off the counter. Rggg! Naughty boy! He's never done anything like this before. The BBQ sauce must have tempted him. I read on a GDV website that you're supposed to not give them water for at least and hour after a big meal, but he drank 2 bowl fulls! He's been sleeping, prolly cuz he's stuffed and got a belly ache, but he went pee pee twice in a half hour (all that water), so his bowels must still be working. Because I've dealt with horses with colic, I tried keeping Luka up, not lying down, so that his stomach wouldn't rest and knot up. He actually dragged me outside and wanted to run, so I pulled him back inside before he could do any heavy exercise. I also held up a kibble of food for him (colicking horses won't eat), and he eaven sat an gave me his paw for the food. Basically, he went pee, he's eating, and he wanted to run, so could he be getting better? I'm just worried cuz the meat was cooked, dripping with thick sauce, had cooked bones in it, had lots of fat, and it was pork for 4 people! How do you lower a dog's cholesterol? Also, how long should I not feed him for? Tonight, obviously, but tomorrow morning? Even tomorrow night? Thanks again for all the advice and thanks in advance! Quote
Daisysmom Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 How do you lower a dog's cholesterol? I don't see anything about that, but I would think that introducing raw veggies and fruits would help. I think he may get a case of diarrhea from eating the pork, especially if you don't usually give him meat. Watch out for that, becaus pork is also on the food allergy list. And one of the symptoms of an allergic reaction is diarrhea. AND YOU ALL KNOW BY NOW, THAT I AM A BIG EXPERT IN DIARRHEA :o Quote
behle Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 Hi Daisymom - Now that you mention it, how is Daisy's digestive system holding up? I haven't seen any updates lately - could be I have just missed them? Quote
Luka-pop Posted April 11, 2003 Author Posted April 11, 2003 Yeah, how is Daisy? BTW, Luka just had diarrhea! It means that is bowel is working, but iit's also a preliminary sign of bloat. Hope everything works itself out. And thanks, I'll give him veggies tomorrow, if his diarrhea is settled. Quote
Daisysmom Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 She has been doing a lot better on the mix of raw chicken, veggies, yogurt and the EN. At first, I had to switch her feeding times around, because she couldn't handle the chicken over night. (couldn't hold it) So now, I feed her the chicken in the morning with veggies or whatever, and then I give her dry food with yogurt at night. I mix it up and it has been pretty good. I over slept this morning, and she pooped for the first time in the kitchen in about a week, and that is great. The vet told me it would take a while for her system to get used to the change, and I think it has :) She still doesn't look right to me. And, I think she has an ear infection, but I have only been treating it with drops, and didn't call the vet. It seems to be clearing up. I was told in similar words that I basically had to cleanse her system and start fresh, and it that, certain things might pop up, i.e., skin rash, pimples, etc. So far that hasn't happened, but we have the ear thang  I am wondering if that is one of the ailments she was speaking about. Thanks for asking!! We go back in a few weeks, and hopefully, that will be the last time. She is very, very expensive :o Quote
Daisysmom Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 Luka, don't forget you can give him some rice too. That should help with the diarrhea. Bananas also help, and Daisy loves them!! Quote
behle Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 Thanks for the update Daisymom! Glad to hear she is on the upswing. I'll keep my fingers crossed for her and you! If it turns out fine, it will be money well-spent! Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted April 12, 2003 Posted April 12, 2003 thanks for the updates Luka and Daisy. :D Quote
Luka-pop Posted April 13, 2003 Author Posted April 13, 2003 Thanks for asking Daisymom. The little :evil_lol: is doing fine. He still has diarrhea, but there were little chunks of pork bones in it (yeah, I checked...), which means that his digestive tract is still working. He even went jogging. He go some rice and bananas yesterday. Now the only problem is... do you think he learned his lesson? LoL. Quote
Daisysmom Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 do you think he learned his lesson? NEVER!!!!!   I'm sure if the opportunity came up again, he would take it and run  Quote
Luka-pop Posted April 13, 2003 Author Posted April 13, 2003 *sigh* ofcourse not. Not to mention he's part lab... *sigh* Quote
