What a Smart/Stupid Dog!

Yup, that's right, my dog is smart/stupid! :o
She is INCREDIBLY inteligent, too smart for her own good actually, knows over 70 voice and hand commands! That's what I call smart.
The stupid part is...
Okay, my sister and her boyfriend came down here for the weekend, right? Tyler is a very tall guy and stuff, so we figured for SURE Hazel would have problems with him. When he first came here last night, Hazel stayed in a different room. We let her get use to smelling him in the house first, and before I went to bed, when I walked her, I came back in and she was sniffing his shoes like crazy, I figured this would probably be good for her, so let her do it. (oh yeah, for those of you who don't know, Hazel's aggressive)
She finally got to actually meet him this morning, and was VERY good. After our walk, I took her into the comp room where they were, and sat her at the door way, away from him. She seemed as if not to notice him! Very good.
Next, she saw him when we were at breakfast, Hazel got to eat her's on the back deck (which is blocked off, so she can only go on the deck) and sat and watched us throught the window after she ate. No problems there.
Third, I brought her inside, took her AROUND him (to be safe, and keep her comfrotable) and Kat told me to show him the tricks she did. So I got out the chese, and Hazel stayed fixated on me, ignoring him COMPLETELY. She walked by him just fine.
Hazel and I were in the comp room, Kat and Tyler came in here, and Hazel was fine, I held her leash just in case though, and stayed as calm as I could. By now i was really calm though, because i figured she was doing REALLY well. When he came out of the room they were stayin in, and went to cross through this room to the living room, Hazel went nuts! Barking and growling. I told her NO, pulled her closer, and calmed her down. She didnt' do as bad as I would have thought, but that's just REALLY weird. It's like she never even noticed him until that moment!! :o

This was the ONLY time YOU weren't calling ths shots. Hazel....He freely crossed even though you were holding her, and before that YOU had control over every situation. Probably the better bet would be to keep her on a lead (so you can control her) and let him wander freely through the house. Correct her firmly for every mistake, make her do all of her obedience training over and over, till she finally gets it. Aggression is hard to train out, but with persistance it can be done. Also, is he afraid of her? (Good luck getting him to admit that, but try....) They can sense fear.
If he feels more comfortable around her if she's muzzled, you might want to consider that as well. At least for training purposes....

Good Luck! I know you have been working really hard with her, and in the long run it will most likely pay off! Keep at it!

The same thing's happened to me with Shadow, only with other dogs. She'll do fine until one moment when she seems to just notice the dog. Weird, eh? Court had some pretty good advice. I'm an amature at dog aggression to humans, but what if Tyler sat down when he first met Hazel?? Would that work? I don't know, just making suggestions. Correct me if I'm wrong or whatever. *smile*

Come to think of it! WOW! It's like a lightbulb over my head!!! :D OKay, when he FIRST met Tyler, he was sitting down, on a very low chair, second time, he was sitting at the dinning room table, (on a chair obviously) third time, he was also sittin, on a high stool, but still, sitting... fourth time, he was walking. I think that may have been what triggered it!! She probably felt more threatened, him being so tall and everything!
He's not really AFRAID of her, but is a little frightened, and will keep his distance sort of deal... so that could trigger it too, I know.
I know how to deal with it and everything, figured out some sure ways, but I was just wondering why she seemed fine one minute, then crazy the next!
Court, your right about the calling the shots too, she was more focused on me those times, (and the treats  ) and so Tyler wasn't much of a threat, or even a concern.
But I think it was mainly cuz those other times, he was just sitting there, calm, this time, he was walking by her.
Thanks! LOL even though I kina figured it out on my own! LOL (with Prairie's help though! )

Why don't you try getting Tyler to give Hazel her dinner. That way she may focus more on the food and forget about being agressive and then realise "Hey this guy can't be too bad if he feeds me"

Actually, we tried getting someone to feed her before, she's a sneaky little brat though! She acted all good, then after she ate, acted out again!
