i've just started switching my pup over to wellness from eukaneuba. i picked up the fish and sweet potato formula which is designed for skin and coat health, specifically in the case of allergies. my dog hasn't shown any signs of allergies, but i thought it would be alright. do you think i can keep her on this or should i switch to chicken or lamb? also, i know that you need to switch foods gradually, but does this apply only to switching brands, or even between different formulas of the same brand? thanks!

If you switch between Wellness types you should be able to switch over faster but you should still mix if you can, there are different ingredients in each. If your dog does not have allergies I would go with the chicken, here the chicken is a little cheaper and if your dog develops allergies to its current food you'll want the option to switch to something later maybe. Wellness is great food, nice choice, unfortunately Kavik will only eat it if he's starving, so we feed Mmillenia, not quite as good but he eats it.

If your dog shows no signs of allergies, limiting the number of ingredients and proteins can actually cause allergies. I think that if you dont have a reason to feed other than chicken, you should feed chicken, jmho. It is important to provide as much variety in a dogs diet as they can handle.

Switching gradually usually applies to brands. I changed by senior dog from chicken wellness to senior wellness cold turkey with no adverse effects. Please remember though that switching foods should be done yearly or bi-yearly not monthly or everytime you use food.

I feed Wellness lamb formula. I really liked Canidae, but so did he - after it came out the other end.
So here's what he gets and ya'll can tell me if I'm crazy.
1/2 cup Wellness dry lamb - munches on it all day
Morning he gets about 1/4 cup of Wellness canned duck or chicken
Afternoon he gets 3-4 sardines and 1/4 of Wysong Archetype - makes a lovely slurry.
Then he gets a Greenie to conteract the sardine effect.
He looks great!
