luckychaos Posted March 28, 2003 Posted March 28, 2003 I just fed my dogs a BARF diet for the first time this morning. Chaos loved it, dug in and ate everything. Lucky ate all the veggies but refused the meat. He's always been fed cooked food before so he's not used to it, but I would like to know why he won't eat it at all. Quote
RR Posted March 29, 2003 Posted March 29, 2003 Hi there glad to hear your trying this out. Funny usually the dogs eat the meat but not the veggies!! :D Give it a few days to allow for transition. Some dogs have to get used to the taste/texture which is obviously quite different than what he is used to. You could process or blend it all together and serve it up. It also helps if its room temperature. Ice cold meat can be pretty unappealing. Another thing you can do to start is lightly sear the meat for a few seconds, that might help. I know there are certain meats my older dog refuses to touch, and thats fine too, just experiment until you find what your dog does like. Good luck! Quote
Carolk9s Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 The first time I offered my dogs raw chicken wings they looked at me as if I'd lost my mind. Once they bit for the first time, they were gung ho. Quote
DogPaddle Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 Could be they need time to adjust or the paticular meat is not to their liking. Tyr will eat anything even lowgrade commercal dog food but he won't eat liver, even if he's VERY hungry, our other dogs will. Tyr will eat - beef, chicken, tuna etc. :niewiem: Quote
alicat613 Posted April 1, 2003 Posted April 1, 2003 You might want to gradually go raw if he liked the cooked meat or go with another meat. My dog hates raw poultry and won't eat bones, so we do a beef and bone meal diet. Commercial bone meal (human grade) is not the same as bones, but if you can find a butcher who will grind bones for you like we have, then you can get the same level of nutrition. Bone meal is generally cooked so the good stuff in it is killed. Every dog is different, so what works for one may not work for another. I definately found that the beginning was somewhat of a pain! We also did a cooked diet first, and it took a lot of research and searching for sources etc but now we have a pretty good raw diet going. Quote
luckychaos Posted April 4, 2003 Author Posted April 4, 2003 Problem solved! Before I fed him I got him all excited about dinner by saying; Lucky are you hungry?! Who wants dinner! Mine, I'm gonna eat it! And he dug in. As soon as he tasted it he was like Oh my dog! human food! and he's been eating fine since then. Quote
