HELLO!!!

I'm not a breeder, but I do love dogs. Well, duh. Otherwise I wouldn't be on this site now would I? lol. When I had my GSD, I use to hook him up to a plastic cart and let him pull it down the street. He loved it, and we did it a lot. Right before he died (he only lived to be a year old *cry*) I was starting to hook him up to a red wagon... you know, the ones that kids play in? Yeah. Nothin fancy or anything. But, It worked and was a lotta fun!!! lol

Well Hmmmm, I happen to know your other screen name, Laduenda. And I don't mean to offend you, but I don't wish to associate around rollers to much. I think you know what I mean. Also, from what I read/know/heard, AmStaffs were used in Bull Baiting and possibly Bear Baiting. Check a book if you think I am wrong.

Yes, ok, I am pricey with my dogs. SO SUE ME!!! They deserve it!

First, I am NOT Laduenda!!!!! How insulting! I think others on this board can let you know I am not Laduenda.
Second, I will again say Am Staffs were not used for what you mentioned. They came AFTER bull baiting was illegal. Maybe YOU should check a book. American Staffordshire Terriers are decendants of the APBT. I will again inform you the standard for the AmStaff was taken from an APBT owned by Colby. Why dont you know this?? They have been bred for conformation only and have not been bred for gameness AT ALL.
I am shocked someone would say they breed but not know this information. Makes me wonder.
I also wonder why you would use a kennel name you know is OWNED by someone else.
I, however, do know, and have been breeding APBTs for YEARS. At least you arent breeding them! Thank God!

Hmmmm is right, perhaps you should read up on the standards of the Amstaff...
the fighting bull - and - terrier breeds of the 1800's spawned the more peaceable American staffordshire Terrier. I'm not even into the "Amstaff" as a breed, although they are nice...but I just opened a dog book and read that one sentence which confirms what Hmmmm said.

I just HAVE to step in here. I have chattered with this breeder, Undertaker Kennels in Yahoo! and she is a very nice person. She told me about Dogomania by the way :) So thank her for bringing my adorable Tyr here!!! Ok, anyway, back to my point. I have a book that says American Staffies were bred for bullbaiting/fighting. Need the name? The NEW Encyclopedia of the Dog. Need the author? Bruce Fogle, a very highly respected dog know-it-all that I look up to like a cloud. Undertaker Kennels may be the name of another kennel, and I don't want to take sides but I may sound like I am, but maybe they didn't know it was already taken. It IS America, a FREE country. Let them do what they want. Don't be so close minded though, I learned the hard way that that doesn't work very well! And if I sound a bit funky, it is because I have been :drinking: . It's my birthday, sorta.

The AmStaff's ancestors were used for bull baiting and bear baiting... but AmStaffs were not ever used for those purposes. Bull baiting/bear baiting was illegal at the time that the AmStaff breed came to be, so they were never involved in such "sports". What they might mean by AmStaffs being used is that the APBT was, and some APBTs were also registered as AmStaffs when the AKC started accepting them. They were still APBTs first though, and any bull/bear baiting was done while they were APBTs, not AmStaffs (not sure if that made any sense at all  ). AmStaffs are bred primarily for conformation events, though some breeders are concerned with preserving working ability in their dogs.

Still, I bet you ANYTHING, that AmStaffers were used in it at some point or another. Whether it was illegal or not is irrelevant. Bet that's spelled wrong. anyway, people still fight dogs today, so why wouldn't they have done it back when it first became illegal?

I'm pretty sure bull/bear baiting had been illegal for some time when AmStaffs were accepted into the AKC. And by that time, the focus had turned more towards matching dog against dog, which was still legal. It's much easier to hold a match between two 30-50 lb dogs in secret than it is to hold a bullbaiting contest between a 50 lb dog (sometimes several)and a chained bull.

*edit: that doesn't mean that no AmStaffs have ever been matched against a bull, simply that it doesn't make up a large part of the breed's history (as that particular breed, if you wanted to include the time when they were all considered APBTs, then it's a much bigger part of the history).

Yea, isnt that nice K??? Laduenda...humph!
The reason APBTs were/are used for baiting, fighting, etc... is because of their gameness. AmStaffs are not bred for gameness. Never have been, never CAN be. Staffs have been bred for conformation with no thought of gameness. You may OCCASIONALLY come across a semi-game AmStaff but the chances are as slim as with any other breed.
Wiccanlove, Undertaker may be a nice girl but she doesnt even know about the breed she is attempting to breed. As well as stealing a kennel name she KNOWS belongs to someone else. That, in my book, is not an honest breeder (if she is a breeder at all.)

If pulling is so bad, why do people all think it's allright to hook dogs up to a sled and run them across the frozen arctic??? People have been using horses for pulling for centuries. I dont think it's bad, just make sure it's not so much weight it injures the dog. If the chest and neck muscles are strong enough, he should be ok. Some people get so caught up in complaining that they forget that the majority of them were bred to WORK....and are happier doing so. Geez, even the little dogs, the toys, were mostly (not always) originally bred to perform some task....

Have fun!

:D

I simply cannot leave you guys alone for a minute. I just went over this thread and it went from nice welcomes to mudslinging. And kennel-fronting and breed-history mixups. I am confused and not getting involved.

Maybe we should start another thread for those who are trying to make a point...?

Actually- would anyone be keen on having a separate Welcome or Introductions section? Would save the newbies from getting lost, and be the warm and fuzzy bit of the board when everything else gets heated. :D Also everyone could post a bit about themselves and their dogs in that section...?
