Amazing Dog Acts

Let me set the scene:
I was getting ready to go to the pet store so i put Drey into the car because its not very far he wasnt crated(thank dog). I can only guess that as i set him down and backed up i hit the door lock with my butt and lcked the car, the car was running the keys are inside! I walked over to the driver door ad found all that out with a pull of the handle. so i checked all the doors, nada. Now my temper is starting to flare so i start to look for a rock and debate on how much it would cost to replace one of the small windows in the back. then I get an idea i walk back to the frnt of the car and call drey he is sitting in the back seat waggin his tail just watching dad flip out. he happily clambers into the front seat and licks the window. so i point at the switch, now in the malibu its in a really weird position up on the side of the door and it sticks out pretty far, so i am pretty sure he can get to it. well first he touched it with his paw and relocked the doors. with a little coercing he actually unlocked the car door so i could get in. Talk about praise i loved and hugged on that dog until he could barely stand.

What about your dogs any cool tricks that happen either out of need or that you just found they could do?

And people say that dogs dont understand. Dogs may not get the entire sentence. its like "blah blak (kavik) blah blah Tyr Blah blah outside" and off they go. But he put it together and even went to get a toy first:)
I think the more time you spend with your dogs the more they catch on to what you want and it is to a degree a level of understanding that forms between the two. I know Daz can read my eyes and if i say his name and start to look he will jump up and run in that direction to "check things out" or when we are out working i tell him to sit down he finds a good spot and kind of settles in but on the field he drops right away. Dogs are a lot smarter than people give them credit for.

Graaa! It has taken nearly a year to get Kavik to go the direction I point when he misses where the kong landed! What am I doing wrong, better yet what are you doing right?

TO be honest i didnt teach it to him, he just started doing it, but then again... it did start when i was teaching him how to catch treats he would miss and then i would have to point at it and show him where it was, but soon i would just point and then i would just look. so i guess in a way i did "teach" him, it just one of those accidental tricks.

What about those anyone else accidentally teach your pup something cool?

I tried forever to teach my female dalmatian to beg when I was in juinor high. She never seemed to get the picture. Then on Thanksgiving one year with a bunch of family and friends ( long after I had given up on her) she marched straight to the person at the head of the table and pretty as can be sat up and begged. After that she'd beg when you told her too. Her timing was perfect though.

:D Those are great tricks! I don't know if what my babies can do could be considered a trick but I think it's worth mentioning.

Now my bitch has chewed on the column gear shift of 3 trucks, 2 jeeps and a motor coach. It wasn't until she got the second jeep that I started to look at why! The second jeep had a deer sack over the four-wheel drive shift-stick and she didn't touch it, just the shift-stick on the column. So I started watching her whenever I left her in the truck to go into the store. This is what she does. She watches the entrance to the store, then she will hit the gear shift with her nose, she does this several times. Finally she will put her mouth on the gear shift and try to pull it down. I do believe my bitch has figured out what makes a car move and she's trying to come and get me.

Now for the boy! When he was about 3 months old he was a chatter-box, making sounds all the time, so I decided to try and teach him to count and say a few words. MaMa seemed to be the easiest. After a few lessons that turned into wet kisses and dumb looks I gave up. One night while camping at the lake, me and my friend were awakened at 4 in the morning to the sound of MaaaaaaaaaaaMaaa! It sounds exactly like a child, and he will not do it on command. He only says MaMa if his sister won't give him his toy back, he wants you to give him some love and you're ignoring him, and finally the best one, when he needs to go outside and potty he will sit by the door and say MAAAAAAAAMaaa!
