Mary's Mama Posted March 11, 2003 Posted March 11, 2003 :o :o :o I actually found some raw marrow bones after weeks of searching. I gave one to Mary tonight. She loves it but I am still a little nervous. She had the outside clean in 15 minutes. After eating about a tbls of marrow (she is 16 lbs), I got nervous too much would give her the runs, so I poked out most of the rest of the marrow. Like I said this is a first for me and I am still really nervous. The bone is thick and not splintering so I am not worried about that. I just hope she doesn't get sick. Such a worrier! Quote
DogPaddle Posted March 11, 2003 Posted March 11, 2003 Kavik is 35lbs, he ate the centre out of a marrow bone in less then half an hour and no problems. How did Mary respond to the amount she ate? Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted March 11, 2003 Posted March 11, 2003 Hazel's around 40lbs... I think... She'll gobble up the marrow like there's no 2moro! She's never gotten sick in the slightest bit... How big was the bone? The one I gave Hazel was about the size of a soup bone... so... Quote
Mary's Mama Posted March 11, 2003 Author Posted March 11, 2003 She's doing fine, thank goodness. The bone was about 5" long and probably had about 5 tblp of marrow in it. Jacks tend to have sensitive stomachs (she throws up bully sticks!). No diarrhea this morning, she actually seemed a little stopped up. So I guess all is well. Quote
DogPaddle Posted March 11, 2003 Posted March 11, 2003 So next time let her eat a little more and see how she does, keep increasing a bit at a time, she'll probably be fine but this way you have peace of mind. Quote
daisykatep Posted March 11, 2003 Posted March 11, 2003 I don't know if this helps but every time our dogs have had a marrow bone they tend to get constipated  I normally take the bone from them after about 20 mins so they dont get any splinters. Quote
Mary's Mama Posted March 11, 2003 Author Posted March 11, 2003 Dogpaddle - That is the plan. Since I dont know how it will effect her I am just trying to take it cautiously. Plus she went to daycare today and I didn't want to get a call to come get her cuz she had the runs. Daisy - Interesting. She did seem a little constipated this morning. I have been told it has the opposite effect. See all dogs are different. She hasn't gotten any splinters off, with the raw bone I am not to worried about that. Now, I have been told that you can wash it and fill it, and freeze it. Anybody got any good recipes? Quote
DogPaddle Posted March 12, 2003 Posted March 12, 2003 Have not heard of that washing filling and freezing, that could be fun. As for splintering - we use shank bones so they are a pretty solid little O of bone once the marrow is removed and I have three chewers (15 month old BC, 9month old or so GSD/Malamute, 4 month Lab/BC) it took them all over 4 days to work the shankbone O to the point where I had to take it away. bk_blue Posted March 12, 2003 Posted March 12, 2003 You could try peanut butter, a lot of people fill up Kongs with it so with a marrow bone I suppose it would serve the same purpose? I don't know how big/small the hole is though so maybe it's not very practical (I don't really know my bone types  ) What are the BIG cartoon style bones called, with the knuckles on each end? BK loves those ones because they're huge and keep him busy for quite a while. :D Quote
bk_blue Posted March 14, 2003 Posted March 14, 2003 Yeah it is sawed in half (you're not going mad K) 8) . You can buy them from the supermarket here like that or whole. They are cheaper from the butcher though and from most butchers for free! :D Quote
bk_blue Posted March 14, 2003 Posted March 14, 2003 Hummmm not THAT mad... yet... :tard: Is it because of CJD/mad cow disease that you can't have untreated bones? (did it reach Europe or just the UK?) Quote
