bk_blue Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 Dad and Vicki got back from SE Asia yesterday and Rinny also came back from the geriatric kennels (like a hotel for old dogs). He's looking ok, very very frail but he's a trooper. Still eating, drinking, hopping round and trying to escape- it appears he hasn't lost the will to live yet... but it makes me really sad to see him now, he's a shadow of the dog he used to be. He's done so well for a German Shepherd- to be still alive at 16 when most of them are gone by 10-12 is amazing. Dad has put up barriers over every considerable jump so he doesn't fall off and hurt himself, and BK looks after him which is the cutest thing of all. They cuddle up together all the time and BK protects him from the annoying little pest (Tomson) when he comes over to visit. BK still acts like a booger whenever I pay more attention to Rinny though, big fat sook that he is. However I fear Rinny's time is almost up... I would say maybe a month... but he has lived a good life and way way past what anyone thought he would. I know I have expressed great concern over his quality of life before but I think I was overreacting- it's not wonderful, but he really does seem to be *happy* and that's all you can ask for. They went to the vet for their checkup last month and the vet said when he goes off his food it's time... Will keep you updated on his progress. Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 So sorry BK I do feel for Rinny. As I have said before we are in the same position with Poppy she has had 2 years over the longest life span for her breed. When she has a few bad days I think this is it, then she bounces back. It is a very difficult to know when the time is right :( Quote
Prairie_Gurl Posted March 9, 2003 Posted March 9, 2003 I'm so sorry BK!!!!! My dog Rocky is getting old too, but fortunatly he doesn't have any health problems, etc. Make sure to give Rinny an extra hug for me!!! I know you'll make this month the best in his life!!! Quote
courtnek Posted March 9, 2003 Posted March 9, 2003 Best of luck to you and Rinny BK. Hang in there, he could surprise you all. As long as he's happy and not in pain, let him go on. He sounds to be in pretty good shape for his age. 16!! WOW! That is a long time for a big dog like a shepherd.... My cat is 15 and getting a little rough around the edges. Best wishes to you and Rinny :D Quote
Marble Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 hey bk- i wish you wisdom for rinny, i've been in that situation with three dogs so far and it's a very hard place to be in. there's nothing like the pain and there is nothing like the memories and the parting and the last little while. know that you have obviously been a great owner and he has been very loved and taken care of.
