Guest Anonymous Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 I just got back from taking Bentley (St. Bernard 9 weeks old tomorrow) to the vet. He's having a problem with his eyelids. The bottom half of his eyelids on both eyes are folding under and onto his eyeballs. Has anyone ever heard of this before? I can't remember the technical name that the vet used. She said that it may be caused by an irritation on the eye itself and gave me a ointment to put on his eyes twice a day for a week. She also said that it may require surgery. Sorry if I'm rambling but I'm upset at the thought that it may require surgery. It's an expensive surgery (though tedious according to my vet). Of course, I've already spoken to my husband and we'll find the money to cover it (if needed) from somewhere. We always so when it comes to animals or kids. Just wondering if maybe anyone knows the correct name of the problem, has heard about it, or maybe has first hand knowledge. Again sorry to ramble. It's just the last thing I expected during a routine shot update visit was to hear that my puppy had something wrong with him. Thanks. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 To be honest I can't remember the name even in vague detail. I was so upset I just kinda went numb. Gonna have my husband call and have the vet explain it to him in better detail I think. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted February 26, 2003 Posted February 26, 2003 They had a show about this on Animal Planet a few months ago, I dont recall the name of the condition and although it did require surgery, the problem was cured. I believe that it was also a St. Bernard. Good Luck! Quote
Poofy Posted February 26, 2003 Posted February 26, 2003 It sounds like entropian. A common problem in many breeds of dogs. First you need to talk with the breeder...I am willing to bet more then one puppy in the litter is affected. Second, you will probably have to have his eyes tacked. This is not a super difficult procedure...usually a general practice vet can do it for little cost. Entropian is genetic and if left untreated can cause problems such as scarring and ulcers. I would have the surgery done asap...since you have not had him that long, perhaps your breeder will be willing to help you pay for the cost? Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted February 26, 2003 Posted February 26, 2003 The breeder was a friend (sorta) who didn't have her two Saints of seperate sexes fixed. I adopted one of the puppies when she was trying to find them good homes. I don't mind about the cost or even if it's hereditary (sp??). I applied the medication earlier tonight and it did seem to help. I'm not going to base my whole opinion on one dose of medicine though. I am wondering if anyone knows if both eyes can be done at the same time or if it's something that will have to be done one eye at a time. Quote
