We took Haley to the vets about two weeks ago for a checkup, and she was doing much better, had gained almost 2 lbs, and had a lot of her energy back. The vet said she seemed to be back to normal again, and that we could go back to our once a month visits... last night I came home from my aunts and Haley was here, looking like a little skeleton again. It appears that her owner had fallen off her insulin/feeding schedule again (from how bad she looks, maybe even skipped some things completely), and just last night decided that Haley was sick enough that she needed to go to the vets. The dog was breathing funny, shivering, and wouldn't move out of the little ball she was curled in. We ended up having to go to the 24 hr vet place, since it was 11 pm, and my mom spent almost $100 (not as much as it could have been, but that's still a lot for nothing) just for the vet there to tell her that Haley was severely malnourished and needed to be put back on her schedule for insulin/feeding. Her blood sugar levels were fine by that time, though we think they had been a little high earlier (it took us over an hour to get to the vets). We ended up bringing her home, and then my mom took her in to her normal vet today, he said it would take probably a month to get her healthy again, and raised her insulin a little. Haley has to stay with us for at least a couple weeks, and my mom is really thinking about finding her another home. In the meantime, we're doing the "dog juggling" act, with five dogs (and a cat) in the house.

Thank you for the update.

MAN that pisses me off.

How is your friend taking it? Does it matter to her that she's in your custody???

She was upset, but I'm not sure whether it was more because the dog was so sick, or whether it was because my mom yelled at her for not taking care of her. She went home to get the insulin before we left, and I had to go get her because she took so long... when I got there she was arguing with her mother over whether or not she took good care of the dog (my mom called her house and asked her mom, and even her mom admitted that she wasn't doing things when they needed to be done). Then she didn't want to go with us to the vets because she didn't want to be there if she had to be PTS... I know different people deal with things differently, but if it was my dog that this had happened to, there would be no way of keeping me from going, especially if I was afraid she was going to be PTS. My mom told her that Haley either needs to stay here so she can be sure she's taken care of, or at the vets, so she didn't even argue. Then today, she didn't even call to see how she was until 3:30 this afternoon. I think that she does miss Haley, but at the same time, she's kinda glad to not have to worry about taking care of her.

I sure hope that Haley gets a new home. That would be for the best.

I take it you can't have her????

And I agree with you. If I had an inclination that my dog would be PTS I would have to be there with it. I want to hold my babies (if possible) when it's their turn to cross the bridge.

Please keep us updated!!!

What a horrible situation. Poor little thing is sick and nobody to take care of her properly... Pretty awkward for you too Gooey? Seeing this person is a friend...? If your friend can't/won't look after her dog then she should really find someone willing to take the time to care for a special needs dog. JMO. 8)

in an ideal situation you would be able to find a good home for her, then tell the friend
it is a very sad situation, i personally think your friend needs telling
a few home truths

You cant send her back to a home like that, thy obviously dont love her otherwise they would have done all they could to keep her well, poor little thing she really does need another home or you to keep her. Tell your friend she could get prosecuted for cruelty for treating a dog like that, it might put her off having Hayley back with a bit of luck! Keep us informed and hold on to her as long as you can.

I doubt she can stay here long... she's a little dog aggressive (which given time, we might be able to work it out so she could co-exist with at least some of our dogs), and my dad would have a fit. I honestly don't think my mom wants another dog either, but she might make an exception in Haley's case  since Haley practically worships her. Goo is already pouting, and seems to be boycotting me because I let Haley up in the chair with me earlier when she was out  (Goo was in the room at the time, but the look on her face when she smelled the chair after we let her back out :o ). Her owner has come to visit for a few minutes for the past 2 nights, and my mom still isn't sure what's going to happen with Haley... at least as to whether she goes back or not. Last night when her owner was here, she said she hoped my mom would let Haley come home soon (we already told her it would be at least a few weeks), so I don't think she's going to make it easy if my mom decides not to give her back. Of course the fact that she wanted to take her while she's still so unhealthy made me wonder if she's just "brushing things off" again, and denying that the dog still has a real problem now that she's not almost dead. I really don't think she deserves her back, she was warned several times that she had to stay on the schedule (and told what would happen if she didn't), yet still went off it... the decision is ultimately my mom's though, and all I can do is tell her what I think and hope she doesn't put the dog back in a bad situation :-? . Haley likes it here... she's not left alone for long at all, and has barely been crated at all (actually we just put the crate up last night, because she's still not housbroken, and eats things, but she was only in there for an hour while we went to the store), and since she's in the office room, my mom is back there with her most of the day. Then every couple hours, we put the other dogs in and let her roam the house. She goes outside happily for us, but when her owner tried to take her out last night, she balked at the door and didn't want to go with her :-? (maybe she's telling her something  ). Her BG (blood glucose) levels have been high the past two days, and the vets actually gave her an extra insulin shot both times, plus she's up 5 units from where she was. We think it's because of all the food she's been eating, but the vet is more worried about how thin she is, so we're going to get her fattened up a little, then worry about adjusting the insulin to where it needs to be.

Forgot to mention that Haley is the messiest (sp??) pit bull I have ever met... she has think "floopy" lips, and they just trap food inside, so anytime she tries to get a drink or lick you, the food ends up in the water or on you   . Here's a pic of her from a couple weeks ago... look at how her lips stick out

GOO
Had a thought on this one

do you think the vet would write to the said owner,
stating he feels that the dog is being abused by not being
given its medication and risking its life.
ETC ETC.

Maybe then she will see some sense and let the dog be rehomed

If she thinks the authority's may step in

I just read this thread. Oh my, that's a lot for your family to deal with Goo.
How is the floopy-lipped Haley doing now?

It sounds as if your friend just doesn't want to deal with the responsibilities of dog ownership. Grrr!

What's been decided?
