alicat613 Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 Hello all. I just wanted to take a minute to share with you something I think is important for all dog owners to think about, especially in the winter. A woman I know online had let her Danes outside to play. When she came out, one was dead. Autopsy revealed she had snapped her neck, most likely they were playing as Danes do, perhaps he ran into her (he's bigger as males usually are) or not, but something happened and she slipped on the icy ground and died. In memory of Kyra, take caution and remember that dogs fall too and they are not invincible. I thank Kim for sharing with many of us her personal tragedy so we might all be more aware and might even prevent this from happening to someone else. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 That is very sad. Thank you for sharing that with us. Thankfully, we do not have much cement in the back yard for them to slip on. I do need to get some of that "dog friendly" ice melt for the back though....don't wanna burn their paws with salt. Quote
Daisysmom Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 That is sad. People with above-ground pools need to be careful too. Our pool has a deck and stairs around it and Daisy goes up there all the time, but the other day, Chelsea ran up there and the cover is full of water. I thought she would go/fall in. It was very scary. I had to block off the stairs with a section of my garden fence. Quote
alicat613 Posted February 2, 2003 Author Posted February 2, 2003 Actually Gigi, I don't believe it was on cement at all. Even grass becomes slippery. The grass here, although not icy, is very slippery from condensation and moss. I just can't imagine the nightmare poor Kim went through, going out and finding poor Kyra like that. A lot of people think I am overly protective of my dog, I won't allow him to play rough with other dogs or run on slippery grass. He is clumsy and slips more easily, as a huge puppy, than many other dogs. A lot of people just think dogs will always be ok, but sometimes they aren't. Thanks Daisy'smom that is good advice about the pools and covers. Hadn't thought of that, not too many pools here in WA. Quote
courtnek Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 OH, how sad....Fortunately my yard is grass, but there is a section where the patio is cement. My son actually fell on it when he was a baby, head hit the pavement, I almost had heart failure. Freebee avoids the cement area when coming in, she goes around the yard, and over the big tree where it's rough textured (there are wood chips inside a "box" around the tree. I wonder if she fell, and that's why she's so careful now? Thanks for the update - I will make sure that the patio area is "ice melted" (ok for dogs) from now on. Quote
Carolk9s Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 Daisymom I would even suggest you reinforce that fencing you put up to block the dogs from the pool, a determined dog will puzzle out a way! 8) We had an ice storm over snow here some weeks ago, the girls were slipping and sliding and Jesse was walking VERY CAREFULLY. I did not let them stay out in it, luckily I was home that day. So sad for the lady who lost her dog to this rather freakish accident. Quote

I guess the one thing I have in my favor is that my dogs wouldn't have that much of a fall, being only 17" and 14.5". Thank you for clarifying that it was NOT ice. Yes, I too have slipped on wet grass. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 wow, how horible! Hazel is ALWAYS supervised when she plays now (well, she has to be too becasue of her aggression...) one summer, when she was about a year and half (the clumsy pup stage) her and the neighbor's dog Duke were running around outside after it rained, I was there, but not very close to them. Hazel went flying past Duke, then went to turn around to race after him again, and slided so bad on the wet grass, she fell and bonked her nose pretty bad! Needless to say, I watch her more carefully when playing now, and she didn't want to play for the rest of the day! :( Quote
