DogPaddle Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 We took Kavik to the new vets Thursday, Zaphod had to go in for shots, we just took Kavik so he could get used to the place - disaster. He freaked! Wasn't scared or anything, he just desperately wanted to see every dog or cat in the place. He was pulling and barking and twisting. I could get him to calm down and look for a few seconds at a time, once in a while and rewarded/distracted him with the kong whenever he was good. We have an obedience class starting in a week and a half and there is no way we (or probably the other dogs either) can work when Kavik is like that. We will be taking him for a vigorouse play session before each class and have been resocializing him and working on the look command but nothing was working at the vets. Any suggestions? Quote
bk_blue Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 Has he been socialised prior to going to the vet's? I think if he just gets used to being around other dogs he'll be ok, it might take only a couple of weeks but maybe a couple of months for him to calm down around other animals. If he's not paying any attention to you, you can either tell him off very strongly for playing up and then praise him for looking/sitting or whatever, until he gets the message that he can only say hello to the other dogs when you tell him it's ok...? On the plus side at least he's very friendly! :) Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 THE CLASS WE ATTEND THE DOGS HAVE A SMELL/SAY HELLO TO EACH OTHER BEFORE THE CLASS STARTS :) Quote
