I need some help here.

Our new addition, Zeke, is extremely prone to motion sickness. 3 minutes into the car ride he's drooling like crazy and by 10 minutes or he pukes.

We like to get the dogs out to the local off-leash dog park, which is 25 minutes, at least once a week, but this is really taking the fun out of it.

We tried giving him Gravol, but it didn't seem to have any impact yesterday. We also don't feed him in the morning if we are going somewhere, but he still pukes up all this liquid.

So, I'm looking for any suggestions. Its getting kind of tiresome to clean-up dog puke.

Is it Ginger that settles a stomach

I always found that Ginger unsettles my stomache . . . maybe I should quit drinking it with rye. :drinking:

Eric - I sympathize. Kavik got carsick too, we did the same things K suggested and he seems ok now, took a couple months. We had the Kavik car blanket for while, it is thankfully gone now.

Ginger is fabulous for many things, including nausea.
Try giving your dog a few store bought ginger snap cookies before the ride. My dog also gets car sick, so i make sure he is fed long before the trip, and give him the cookies a few at a time starting about 30 minutes prior. I continue giving him small bits of cookie in the car, I think it helps to get the yucky nausea taste out of his mouth.

You can also buy ginger syrup often at drugstores, should be with nausea meds like Coca Cola syrup or with pregnancy/baby stuff. The problem there is getting the dog to eat they syrup.

Supposedly the smell of newspaper helps too, so we have some folded newspaper in the car to put near his nose, although I have to say I don't see much effect from that.

It does help for us to keep the windows down a bit and be careful driving so it is a smoother ride.

And of course we keep a lot of baggies and paper towels in the car. Luckily with my dog you can tell in advance, so we've got it down to him actually puking right in the bag. Handy, but still a waste of food and not good for the puppy of course.

Fortunately over the many years of dogs I have never had one which was carsick. All have travelled distances to shows and when I went to my daughters wedding three of them travelled 12,000klms with me on a trip lasting 5 weeks. I always started pups out with a 10 minute drive slowly building up the time and distance.
I have always driven but recently with Ben being so sick I have had someone drive and I have sat in the back with Ben, it's enough to make anyone ill, the difference in the ride is amazing, every bump, every sway is felt so much more.
Some years ago went to a show with a friend and her Irish Setter youngster. Half hour into the trip her dog stood up, leant over the front seat and threw-up into her open handbag.

Ginger really is the way to go and keeping the window down, some dogs thankfully grow out of it.

My old bullmastiff bitch use to love going to shows (she was very people friendly and thought all the people were there just to pat her  ) she would get so excited that just before we got there she allways threw up on me

Hum...Is it Ginger that settles a stomach...or was that charcoal biccies for dogs....

Anyways...my only suggestion is take Zeke on more journeys...but little ones...the 10 mins to the shop and so on...and build up the time...and have a window open (even if you have to freeze :) )

Paddy used to suffer with car sickness we took him on lots of short journeys kept the car cool it worked now he can travel anywhere. I Still take the damp towels kitchen roll ect to clean up don't need them now

I would try keeping her down in the car, so she cant see out the window,
My Golden used to get car sick, and keeping him down helped. Some of them cant deal with the motion they see out the window. just like some people.....

we found with the Golden that crating him in the car, with a blanket over the crate, prevented him from "seeing out" and stopped the motion sickness.
