Couple more Questions

Alright as usual I have some more questions..

The other day Isabelle made me really mad, I was trying to clip her nails and she absolutely refused to let me, Ive never drawn blood before, but she has a fear of these new nail clippers.. Before we were just trimming them with normal nail clippers, no biggy, well this time I got Dog Nail CLippers you know those ones that look like Pliars.. Well for whatever reason Id on't know if she doesn't know what it is or what.. But I let her sniff them let her do whatever she wanted but when I go to cut her naill Shes like.. Nope.. Sorry Dad :evilbat: I even tried to hold her paw down and she ended up biting me.. Like Hard.. Does anyone know how to get a dog not to bite you.. I tried to say no bite and tape her on the snout but she did the snarl at me you know where they show there teeth.. She wasn't too happy with me at all.. and rather than letting her bite someone again I want to stop this before it gets worse.. I know a Dogs self defense is primarily there teeth, but Id rather not see the use of blood..

Lets see.. Oh next question... We are working on tricks .. (before the biting started).. and we got down sit and paw.. But how do you get the dog to lay down or to say her prayers? I tried lowering the treat or even pushing her down but she refuses to do that much...

Any suggestions??

Try to soothe her when you clip..just clip one nail at first.Or give her treats. Then maybe she'll like getting her nails clipped..Was it a real bite or just a nip?Try screaming or make a loud noise if she bites again. That way she'll know she hurt you(if the bite was unintentional..).
Move the treat down, and also forward. If her bottom goes up, press your hand on her to hold her down..not too hard though..

Wish I could help with the snapping thing but have no experience with bitey dogs... just make sure she knows YOU are alpha and will not put up with that sort of behaviour from her. Be very firm about this otherwise one day she won't let you get near her feet with those clippers and will think she's "won".
With the lay down do you mean as in on her side, or just a down on haunches type thing? If you can perfect the sit that's a good start. Tell her the command "down" "drop" or whatever you use, lower the treat between her front legs (important- make sure you have her undivided attention first!) and if she doesn't budge tell her the command again and force her down by grabbing her front paws if you can and putting her in the drop position. Then give her lots of praise for it, as if she's done it herself. That's what I do with BK when he is being prissy and uncooperative (I try not to use food though- personal choice and he's not very food motivated), and it works. Best of luck! :)

Sorry forgotten what breed of dog you have, what size?

I do have a couple who hate with a capital H having their nails done.

With one of ours we,sit the dog on one persons knee, then sort of sit it up with the back against you, leaving legs in front, keep head and teeth away from faces and fingers  and clip
Another method is to cover the face so that they cant see what you are about to do

I do this with the 3 little dogs when I clip/grind their nails, it seems like some dogs get all stressed out as soon as they see the clippers heading toward their toes, so it calm them down when they can't (it doesn't work on all dogs though). You can either have someone else hold her while you clip, muzzle her and tie off her head so she can't turn into you, or find something to distract her while you clip them one-a few at a time. I use peanut butter on a plate as a distraction, and tape it to the wall a little higher than they normally hold their head. Also, you don't have to make the nails actually bleed for them to hurt sometimes, the squeezing action of the clippers can cause the nail to "squish" a little and pinch the quick, causing pain.

All you need is a plastic clicker and some turkey! If I can train a Shiba to sit QUIETLY (they scream!) to have his nails clipped, you can too! It's really easy to do. In the beginning it feels like it's a much longer training method, but it actually only took me 15 minutes the first time whereas I was spending 30 minutes wrestling him into a headlock and ending up with a very unhappy dog. I can do all 4 feet in a few minutes now. If you've never tried it before, I can explain my method, but there is a ton of info out on the web that probably explains it better.

You could also take the dog for a 15 min jog on cement 1x per week. Wears their nails down nicely, wouldn't go much faster than a light jog - you know how rough high impact aerobics are on our joints, imagine its the same for puppies.
