I have always dreamed of having a Newfie....and my second dream dog is a standard poodle. (wonder what THAT mix would look like :P )

HMMMMMMM...would they be Newoodles....or a Poofoundland...well back to my questions:

1. It is hot hot hot here...could they take that?
2. Also, being big, do they have a short life span?

Jolly,

Best thing to do is research. Are there any Newfie owners in your area? Breed clubs? How about a rescue? Newfiemom could probably help in that area.
Take a look here for more info on the Newfie:
http://www.newfdogclub.org

You can also call breeders and talk to them about your living environment and they will tell you if a Newfie would be suitable for your lifestyle.
Hope this helps.

To simply answer your questions, No, Newfoundlands cannot tolerate hot weather because of all that fur. And, no, you can't just shave them down either. Secondly, they do not have a long life, unless you count a maximum of around 11 years long. I would serisouly think of another breed if I were you. How about a Cane Corso?? (Just a suggestion!)

Lol, come on now, who can resist a big huggable ball of love and slime? I know I can't! I have 8 of them currently and 9 Canary dogs!

*Ahem*cough* On the other hand, Standard Poodles CAN do just fine in warmer climates and CAN be clipped short if you choose to do so. Since SP's were high on your list of favorite doggers, anyhoo....

HF (another HUGE SP fan)

PS.
They don't typically drool! 8)

Standard Poodles are great dogs. I was thinking about getting a poodle prior to getting Kavik. They are bright and loyal, love sporting activities, have been known to be feirce protectors of their loved ones and they are excellentl snugglers.
