I was just wondering if dogs are subject to frost bite because my dog was getting to the point where he was yelping on his walk last night his paws were so sore?

Try getting him some "Paw Protecter" (that's what I have anyway... It's also been called "the Invisible Boot") or some booties... your dog shouldn't be in pain while trying to enjoy a walk!!

I'd also check his paws to see if any cuts, bruises, foreign objects etc. If you are walking in snow/ice, it could build up between the toes and cause pain. Check the toenails too, make sure none are broken.

Dogs are in some cases more at risk of frostbite or damage to pads than we may realize, road salt really exacerbates existing frostbite and/or causes damage that makes pads more susceptable (sp?) to frostbite.
Booties or Paw Protector are great, at the very least limit his time out of doors until paws heal, wipe them clean when he comes in to remove salt, and apply petrolium jelly to pads until you can get paw protector or booties.
My mom's mutt got mild frostbite on his right rear pad and was ever after more sensitive to the cold in that foot. Not that you could convince him to come inside  .

Its a balmy -23 C or -9 F here right now with wind chill. Last evening it was -31 C or -24 F with wind chill. The boys were making poopsicles in 60 seconds. It is easier to pick up but it is so very cold. Kavik doesn't care but Zaphod goes out, does his stuff and is on his way back into the house almost before he is done. :)

I don't have a fence so I have to be out there with him. It is not fun, and all he wants to do is diddle around and sniff everything. Why?! WHY didn't I put the fence up first?!

I'm in Ottawa and this past we've had a real cold spell here as well. Last week we hit -28 C one night, and the rest of the nights have been dipping to -23 to -25 C with a "high" of -20C during the day.

Its been tough on my dogs. We go out for a bit but as soon as I see them lifting their paws up we go in.
