Hi, I also have another question here today if any suggestions. Since we had to put our 11 year old shar-pei down to rest last summer our 11 year old husky has seemed to be lonely but I am giving him alot more attention to compensate for that. And I love having 2 dogs at one time. So my question is, Do I buy a 2nd dog now or wait til my husky has passed. My theory is ,that if I buy a 2nd dog now, won't the new dog be heart broken then to loose his mate?(Since my husky is 11 he probably doesn't have a really long time yet.) Or do I just wait til my husky has passed before looking for a new dog? ( We are looking at Weimaraners at this time also) Any suggestions I would appreciate. Thanks again. Lisa

Getting a pup can often give an old dog a new lease of life, especially when they have lost their best friend.
Do what you think is best

03 January last year we had to pts our 4 year old shar-pei she was in the final stages of kidney failure. We had an 11 year old shar-pei she went so depressed she started having bad days (she had a stroke 18 months earlier) we did not think she would last much longer. we could not imagine life without a sharpei. we started looking for a puppy right away. we ended up buying 2 puppies the week after easter 6 april. Poppy the older dog picked right away got a new lease of life "helping to look after the puppies" now Poppy's 12 years 5 months and doing well. We made the right choice for us and Poppy

Every dog is different. Your dog might be rejuvinated and very happy to have a new pup/freind in the house. On the other hand your dog might be an old crumedgeon and not appreciate little wippersnappers disrupting his routine. Do you have a freind who has a youngish dog who might bring it over to visit and see how your dog reacts?

Thank you all for replying. Bj(my husky) is still very energetic & shows very little signs of old age so I will really consider the 2nd dog again. And yes I did borrow my sisters dog 1 day and they got along great & Bj had a blast. But my other big concern was will I be hurting or disappointing my new dog when it's time for Bj to be put down some day? (just in case I don't go out and get another dog at that time?) Hope this makes sense. Thanks again. Lisa

I could be wrong but:
If your dog enjoyed the company of your sisters dog, even in his own home, he probably would enjoy company. If your a two dog person I'd go with it. As for the second dog being lonely when BJ gets older . . . you could also adopt another dog to keep yourself at the 2 dog level or prepare the 2nd dog by having him spend time alone/apart from BJ as BJ gets older. This will also give your aging guy a bit of respite from a more energetic housemate.
