Does anyone know about how old a pup should start learning/getting simple comands like sit, give me your paw and etc?

I can't get Chelsea to do anything yet. She is about 14 weeks now.

A pup can start learning things as soon as you're ready to teach them  . You have to remember though, that at first it will seem like a lot of repetition to get nowhere. Keep the training sessions short, and fun for both of you.

Do ALL dogs have brains? Mine ate her's last month and I gave her mine, and I don't have one.

Of course ALL dogs have brains  Humans on the other hand.... :o

BINGO!!! :D :D
I have had puppies that could sit and down EVERYTIME they were told by the time they were 10 weeks. Seems to me that tricks take a little longer since they are not "Natural" dog behaviour. (Meaning that you do not see an untrained dog in the yard "shaking hands" but you DO see them sitting there.) Keep working with her. She will "get it" eventually.

How are you training her? By "Force" or with treats?

You know, she does sit, and it seems that she already knew that when we got her. Or, she just watches the others sit and get a treat, but she WILL NOT give me her paw????? I read up a little tonight, and it seems that I should work on sit, lay down, then stay. When she gets that, I should work on the paw thang :)

On a different note: This forum has been getting some strange responses lately....... really getting strange!!

I think all pups are different. Kavik was 14 weeks before he began to grasp sit, Zaphod sat at 9 weeks. Kavik learned down as soon as we brought him home, I despair of Zaphod ever learning it. Like others said, make it fun for both of you, keep at it. :)
PS I think that the strange poster is just trying to make a pest of themselves, perhaps we should avoid feeding the wildlife.

I think so too. QUITE annoying.

Also to Daisysmom, Is she the type of puppy that uses her feet alot. Meaning does she paw at things? Some dogs are VERY easy to teach certain tricks. Especially if they do the required behaviours themselves. The 2 "heeler" we have now are the first 2 dogs I have ever had that will "roll over" on command. BUT when they were puppies they were always rollong over on their own.
What are you doing to try to teach her to "shake'"?

I first make her sit, which she seems to have no problem with, but think that it is just natural (like we discussed earlier) then I tap her paw and give the command. I have a treat waiting and the other two behind her are giving me their paw because they want the treat  I say it over and over, I take the paw and saw good paw, and give her the treat. I try again without taking her paw. I have tried with the other two out of the picture and etc..... What am I doing wrong?

Sounds to me like you aren't doing anything wrong. Might just be a tough one to teach her. Keep up with the practice. I would also work with her without the other dogs around. She needs to concentrate on YOU not what the other dogs are doing.

Our pups were with us until at least 10 weeks...and they wouldn't respond to anything....it was as if we had a bunch of kids gone wild! It was nuts. Completely NUTS. They would just run around and play and play. But then again, we had three of them. They didn't listen. Kinda like my husband.
