Poofy Posted January 12, 2003 Posted January 12, 2003 if you know when the b*tch was bred, you can expect puppies in about 65 days from the first breeding. About 10 days, before her due date, begin taking her temperature. When her temp drops to 99, and stays down for more then 12 hours, expect the puppies to be born within the next day. She is a small dog if she is an RT. You might have to be ready for a c-section. If the mismate occured with another rat terrier, a c-section will be unlikely, but if it was another breed, the puppies have a higher chance of being very large. When she begins labor, watch for her water to break. If the first puppy is not born, within 2 hours of her water breaking, I would take her to the vet. Also, watch for sign of squatting, like she is trying to pee, during labor. This can also be a sign of not being able to push the babies out. After the babies are born, make sure you get an oxytocin(sp?) shot to help contract her uterus and clean her out to prevent infection. Ideally, if she is not a brood bitch, and you are not showing her, and she is just a pet, it would be better to simply spay her now and abort the puppies to keep from producing unwanted puppies and risking her life. Also, since this was a mis-mate...have you had the dog who mis-mated her and her, tested for brucellosis? This is a bacterial infection that is passed on through breeding or exchange of body fluids. It is potentially contagious to humans as well and by handeling new born puppies, after birth, etc. you could potentially expose yourself to it. Quote
