Hello fellow dog lovers! I JUST got my first dog (well, MY own dog, not families) and he is doing ok after almost dying of an infection after his neuter, but that's a different story...LOL. I want to adopt another dog as a friend, but the one I found had KENNEL COUGH  and is formerly from a PETSTORE :evilbat: but has been treated and out of store for two weeks now. What I need to know is, if my dog has been innoculated for K.C. (intranasal) is he immune enough to adopt this puppy? I fell in love with her,
but I don't wanna risk my first dog's health. I know K.C. isn't fatal, but highly contageous and can be serious in toy or brachicephallic breeds.

Thanks in advance,
Ail 8)

P.S. I am in NO WAY advocating buying a puppy from a petstore...she is now owned and IMHO, being abused by her purchasers. Who are so psycho, they want 100% of their money back, which is $900 on a sick puppy! OMG!

Personally, there is NO way I would give $900 for a sick puppy. Even if it wasn't from a pet store. You could get 9 dogs for that price if you went to a shelter! Also there is no guarantee that K.C. is the only thing wrong with that puppy. What if you do buy it, and find out that it has all kinds of other problems? If you just want another dog, why not go to the shelter? If you are set on a puppy of a certain breed, go to a REPUTABLE breeder. At least that way you can get a guarantee. Also if you just got your first dog, I would wait to get a second dog. Give him more time to bond with you. Getting a second dog may very well cause him and the second dog to bond with each other rather than you. This will make any training a thousand times more difficult.

 It's just my soft-heartedness that makes me wanna "rescue" this puppy from these morons, 'ya know? But you are right, I would probably be setting myself up for heartbreak if I adopted a (formerly) sick puppy,
(she had K.C. but supossedly comes with a $1,000 health insurance from the store, but God knows if that's transferable to me) esp. for $900. I still cannot fathom that these IDIOTS expect to get 100% back on a "used" petstore puppy that is 4 months old, and they cannot handle anymore! See, she was bought as a Christmas present for the old guy's wife, who likes her carpet more, so she put a TOY puppy outside (we are talking a 4 month old female PEKINGESE here!). BITCH!

Anyways, there are no breeders around here, and the rescues are far away and it isn't the weather to ship a dog. I have had my beautiful 2 year old male neuter Peke (I rescued from another moron, but for $100) (oh, and he was formerly from a petstore too!) for 4 months now, so we are pretty bonded. However, he came with NO training, so we will go to beginner obedience in the Spring. Perhaps that is when I will look for a little Peke pal for him? I just think he's lonely. And two's so much happier

THANKS to the two of you who responded thus far...I am a dog newbie. so expect me to ask silly questions at first, think I can pick your brains?

Okay, just dig a hole underneath the fence and let her go free. Then .... evil laugh .....just pick her up and SHE'S YOURS!

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Sometimes, you just have to think EVIL!

I have always felt a pet (beit dog, cat, ferret what have you), is running around loose it is fair game for us rescuers (and sorry, I rescue cats guys!).
I would love to do that, or maybe coax the puppy over to me gentle like...
 but these people sound like dangerous types (think Sopranos) so...
I won't risk it! Besides, I do not know where they are located.
Oh BTW, I hear the poor puppy has been banished to their business now!

I may pop back in to ask for help about my Peke, but otherwise, you guys convinced me NOT to deal with these people, and let someone else buy her.

Thanks,
Ail

Hi Ali,

I am new to this site but I have been a peke owner for many many years. If you want to get a peke puppy I recommed finding a breeder that shows pekes. Many times they wil have healthy pet quality pups that they are willing to sell very reasonably to a loving good home. I have just started showing so I am new to that world but I can definitely direct you to some breeders if I know what area you are in. I feel so bad for that little pet store peke you were thinking of rescuing. By the way you can actually find some breeders willing to sell a show quality male peke for $900.00!

Take care!

One small point I'd like to make is that the vaccination for kennel cough only protects the dog from one strain I use to do rescue for my breed only to introduce kennel cough to my dogs and even though they were vaccinated they still got it apparently there are various strains so be very careful
