Guest Anonymous Posted January 4, 2003 Posted January 4, 2003 Please some one help us!! My St. Bernard is a big gentle puppie with us, however lately he has snapped at three peoplr in the last 3 weeks. One of them a child! We are talking about putting him to sleep. WE LOVE HIM! but we do not want to take any chances for him to hurt anyone else. Any suggestions??? (He is 3 years old) Quote
DogPaddle Posted January 4, 2003 Posted January 4, 2003 There are a lot of people here who would be willing to make suggestions but they will certainly need more information. Just as a start: What where the exact circumstances of each incident? Describe the dogs usual behaviour and body language? Describe the dogs behaviour and body language just before and during the incident? What sort of training have you already done with your puppy? Quote
Poofy Posted January 5, 2003 Posted January 5, 2003 I strongly suggest that you seek out an animal behaviorist/psychologist that is associated with a university or established vet practice. It is very dangerous to take behavior modification advice from strangers that you don't know and do not know (or have proof) if they have any type of professional training. I really hope that you will seek out professional help from some one that can give you HANDS on guidance. Good Luck Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 A few other suggestions for getting some training help...local shelters may have trainers that they recomend, they would much rather see a dog stay in his home rather than be given up. Your vet may also have a behavorist or trainer that he/she recommends. Aggression usually doesn't happen overnight, generally there are signs before a true bite ever occurs. Try to evaluate your whole situation before getting in touch with a trainer so that they can get the whole picture. Good Luck! As a last resort, a St. Bernard Rescue may be willing to take the dog, just please be honest about the reasons why you are giving him up. Quote
